Description A very special page, this. Not part of the storyboard, it was improvised on the day and inspired by Flordeoro's concern for Sally.

A big reason why Sonic's chase to retrieve Sally was so stale in Archie's comic is because of how poorly it expressed Sonic's emotional state in this ordeal. Issue #236 is where things fell apart. By then, Sonic seems to have accepted Sally's transformation and is joking about while trying to subdue her. It was very tone-deaf and demeaning to how anxious readers must feel for them. It was sad to see Archie lose focus on how Sally's fate affects Sonic. I'm not suggesting that the comics needed to be all angsty and melodramatic, but they needed to maintain a sense of Sonic's anxiety underneath his cocky veneer.

While I was planning to address this topic later, Flordeoro's comments reminded me that I was in danger of falling into the same trap as Archie by ignoring Sonic's feelings for too long. After Lien-Da's taunting in the last issue, Sally must always be on his mind... and in his dreams. I believe this page illustrates how worried Sonic must be for Sally and how much he misses her. It's the emotional heft the story needed.
So barring an annotation on the page, do you recognize which issue Sonic's flashback is from?

I want to say 'Mobius Can Wait', but that's just a guess

Close enough. The title of the issue is "The World Can Wait". It's one of my favourites.

Thanks for all your wonderful mandates, SEGA!

It does raise a question: Do you think a page like this would be officially approved? You know how stingy Sega are over depictions of Sonic's emotional range.

Remember how in Forces, Knux said that Sonic spent several months being tortured in the Death Egg? Remember how they portrayed Sonic after that kind of trauma?

...Yeah, SEGA is clearly more concerned with how their mascot looks than about accurate character portrayals.

It's especially interesting if you compare the scene just before the Zavok boss fight to the scene where Amy free's Sonic from his cell in Prison Island in SA2. There, he'd only been locked in that cell for a few hours and GUN hadn't likely done anything bad to him in that time, but he's pacing back and forth and clearly not in a good mood due to being stuck in one place. Even if Eggman had done nothing to Sonic, his freedom being restricted like that for six whole months should have had him in a really bad mood, especially since he'd also know his friends are fighting for their lives out there and he can't help them. So even without the torture Sonic's attitude in that cutscene makes no sense.

That said, I can understand him at least trying to act like he's not affected by what Eggman did to him so Eggman wouldn't have the satisfaction of breaking him and so his friends won't worry. It'd be nice if he still took things a bit more seriously though.

I know, right? Isn't it sad that a bunch of fans understand this character better than the people making his games?

Ugh, that really annoyed me. Sonic should've been absolutely serious and stone cold. If he had to have a sense of humor, it needed to be a lot more dry and harsh than what it was, which would further demonstrate how much Sonic has changed since his last encounter with Infinite.

So when does your comic take place? Does it take place when Sally got roboticized.

Nope. Definitely not.

I'm fine with Sonic not being overly emotional 90% of the time. It's just that if you take enough emotion away from his character, you're left with a static...mascot.

Indeed...Sonic isn't exactly an emotional guy and he should remain that way for most of the time, but I'm certain even someone like him would have his moments, just like this one. It would certainly be good character development to show this kind of thing—especially in official media.

As long as he's still the hero he needs to be. I don't want to see him be so confident and cocky during moments where he SHOULD take certain things seriously. I want an interesting and vulnerable hero.

Exactly. Exactly.
And I have seen him be serious when he needs to be serious.

Its why I loved the first Iron Man and Civil War so much. Despite Tony Stark being a very humorous and cocky man, in those movies, he knew when to take certain situations and problems seriously. Heck, even Iron Man 3 understood this.

The only other incarnation of Sonic we've seen that balanced the seriousness of the character as well as the humor was in Sonic Satam. For with every scene we have of him mocking Robotnik and destroying his robots, we had other scenes of him mourning the loss of his friends and loved ones, particularly Uncle Chuck.

I have seen both the first IRON MAN and CIVIL WAR, and I've definitely seen that. I have not seen much of SatAM, but I've seen enough to know. And I would love to see that out of Sonic, not just in the games but in other media as well.

Very much agreed. I love the Sonic Archie comics, and I hated seeing it get scrapped where it was getting so epic. Here's hoping this comic continues that epic streak, because its been doing great so far!

nxgnetwork In reply to uniqueness35 [2018-02-06 18:47:36 +0000 UTC]

Definitely has. And this is coming from someone who wasn't able to get totally into the Archie series because of the way it was being handled up until its cancellation...I didn't know where to start.

For me, the comics don't get consistently great until Issue 160. Beforehand, there would be Issues with variations of random quality. Some Issues, like the Xorda storylines, were great. But other Issues, like 134, would seriously put a stain on the characters, story, and even the artwork. Issue 160 is when the comics, for the most part, adopted a permanent look, style, character development, and emotional stakes.

Your welcome! One word of advice: If you see the writer's name as Ian Flynn, your good. He's written all the comics since Issue 160.

So I've heard. In fact everything I have read of his that he's written (and, in the case of his Sonic Boom episodes, watched) has been really good.

Sonic Boom is so funny, and its amazing that its based off of such a terrible game. Interesting how certain things are.

Very interesting, undoubtedly. And regardless of whether or not it continues for another season, there's no doubt that it ended up being much better than a lot of us expected. I thought it would be at least decent, but it's certainly gotten better over time.

Even though I doubt it, I would love for Sally and Nicole to be in Sonic Boom Season 3. They're such great characters, I would hate for them to be left behind. Sally doesn't even need to be romantically involved with Sonic. I just want them to BE there!

I never thought about that, actually. But it would be nice to see them again at some point somewhere soon enough, just to see them again and have them in more awesome adventures.
