A very special page, this. Not part of the storyboard, it was improvised on the day and inspired by Flordeoro's concern for Sally.
A big reason why Sonic's chase to retrieve Sally was so stale in Archie's comic is because of how poorly it expressed Sonic's emotional state in this ordeal. Issue #236 is where things fell apart. By then, Sonic seems to have accepted Sally's transformation and is joking about while trying to subdue her. It was very tone-deaf and demeaning to how anxious readers must feel for them. It was sad to see Archie lose focus on how Sally's fate affects Sonic. I'm not suggesting that the comics needed to be all angsty and melodramatic, but they needed to maintain a sense of Sonic's anxiety underneath his cocky veneer.
While I was planning to address this topic later, Flordeoro's comments reminded me that I was in danger of falling into the same trap as Archie by ignoring Sonic's feelings for too long. After Lien-Da's taunting in the last issue, Sally must always be on his mind... and in his dreams. I believe this page illustrates how worried Sonic must be for Sally and how much he misses her. It's the emotional heft the story needed.
So barring an annotation on the page, do you recognize which issue Sonic's flashback is from?

This is great page. I love Sonic's emotional state in this one. You can clearly tell he misses her dearly.

Even worse, Uncle Chuck confirmed that when your roboticized, you can still see and hear everything, but you can't stop yourself. Your literally trapped in a metal killing machine.
I can't imagine the terror and guilt that Sally's going through, and the trauma that follows after she gets deroboticized.

The topic of how Sally's transformation affects her prompted me to post a poll for my readers last month on my Patreon page. If Sally is deroboticized, how much of her experience as Eggman's weapon against her friends do you want her to remember?

I can't do Patreon, but I can say, here, that I prefer Sally remembering everything, as it would really give her character some real drama and show us that things as severe as Sally's extreme roboticization has consequences. Sure, her friends, family, and people wouldn't blame her for any of it. But she would. She wouldn't handle it, at least not at first. Being a background servant like Uncle Chuck is one thing, but to be mutated into something of a living killing machine, and essentially being the Darth Vader of the Eggman Empire is another problem entirely!
That's what I think, honestly.

I agree with This-is-amazing-work. I don’t necessarily blame Ian for it; it may have due to SEGA’s mandates. Ian Flynn himself once told me he’d like to give Sonic more emotional depth and would if he could.

he is partially to blame, but his lawsuit was a stupid reason for Sega to enact certain mandates like Sonic can never be emotional or lose.

That's also stupid. Why can't Sonic lose for once? He suffered a monumental failure in Issue 175, and while the story was epic enough for me to want to see Sonic win immediately after, why not have Sonic lose for a long period of time? Have him go through an Empire Strikes Back story where everything goes wrong for our heroes? Sure, we got that with the Mecha Sally story arc, but even then, he managed to pick himself up pretty quickly afterwards(though I think it has more to do with Tails and Amy knocking some sense back into him).
I love seeing heroes fall, so that they can get back up and fight again. Stories like Civil War, Empire Strikes Back, and even The Last Jedi handled that concept brilliantly. I would love for Sonic Retold to have something like that. It probably won't happen anytime soon, but maybe after the Mecha Sally Arc is finished, maybe another villain, worse than Eggman, will bring him down for a long while and bring hell to the Freedom Fighters of Mobius.

I had an idea in Issue 176, where Eggman DOES capture everyone, or at least gets the rest later on, and forces Sonic to be Mecha Sonic again. I imagined a scene where he apologizes to Tails for the whole Fiona fiasco, and begs Sally to stop him by any means necessary.

I actually came into the Sonic Comics when Sally was already roboticized. My very first comic was actually when Silver went back in time to confront Antoine, believing him to be the traitor, only for Sonic to literally drag Silver to Antoine in a coma. I had no idea how long things had been that way when I got into the series so I didn't really notice the way they presented Sonic too much about this feelings towards everything that went wrong. Sorry for not realizing their mistakes sooner.

I love the page and im sure than you know it. It shows one of my favorite moments of the comic (222) and I love to see it here.
I always have think than Sally is someone important to Sonic, not JUST as a girlfriend, she is important because they have passed the worst moments of their life together. They loose and win working toguether, that make them close and they support their weakness in the other strengths.
Sonic always have show a priority about his friends and the people than he considers important. That makes him a character than its alive.
I love all Sonic expressions in all the page. It shows all kind of feelings without dialog just a name; nostalgic, surprise, afraid, terror... all it goes growing and makes the reader to be empathic with him.

I think this is the closest Sonic has ever come to a PTSD moment.
Even if it's a hallucinogenic dream-turned nightmare.
The Satanic-smiling Eggman was a nice touch.

I imagine, and hope, that Sonic's PTSD continues even after Sally's rescue. The poor kid's lost friends, family, and even supporters. He's gone into space, away from his home and life for a year. He's gone through painful breakups, humiliating failures like Issue 175, and was forced to witness Antoine's near death experience without being able to save him.
I honestly wouldn't be shocked to see this guy cut himself off from everyone just to avoid the pain of losing someone again after this story arc has concluded.

It is funny how for a good two years they wanted the comic to be as dark and angsty as possible... yet at the same time have Sonic brush off everything as no big deal and make jokes about it. I mean they even had him being snarky and having fun fighting baddies while over the Echidna City while it was still in ruins and under attack...

Yeah, no. The one advantage this comic has that the Archie comics didn't, is that this isn't made by SEGA. This comic can be whatever it wants to be, and it doesn't have to follow SEGA's horrible mandates and have its characters be restricted to their basic plot identities, designs, and story formulas. We can see Sonic breaking down, Amy wearing different outfits unlike her usual wardrobe(like an army outfit). We can see more intricate relationships that are probably forbidden in the actual comics. We can see our favorite characters back again, storylines dropped being continued, bloodier battles, real emotional stakes and actual, lasting consequences.
Heck, we might even see Eggman achieve victory for a long while in this story should Glitcher choose to do so. This comic is completely and utterly free from restriction. As long is captured the heart and soul of what made the original comics so good in the first place, which this comic has been doing a great job so far, I am not worried about whatever Glitcher chooses for future Issues of Sonic Retold. She knows what she's doing.

Well, to be fair, the reboot wasn't half bad. Sure, it still had the mandates, and the artwork was probably a little hard for me to bear, considering that it looked like it was aimed for younger readers whereas the original comics felt more adult and had more intricate artwork(though I have seen some great scenes and art in the reboot too). Even still, I liked the comic where Nicole goes to meet her creator, and it leads to an emotional resolution that even I wasn't expecting.
