A silly quickie I meant to draw ages ago after the "Waves of Change" story arc ended. (I'm overworked!) After Sonic's harrowing experience battling foes underwater, I thought he'd try to get some lessons in swimming so that he wouldn't feel so lost at sea. If there's one thing he's learning fast, it's that hedgehogs don't swim. But I really drew this as an excuse for Tails to take on the role of big brother for a change.

The one time I tried swimming in the sea, it was during a Boy Brigade camping week in Wales - and it was chilly, so I never went in again further than my ankles...
I'm fine in a heated swimming-pool, of course.

This is adorable. I can totally see Tails teaching Sonic how to swim. Now for some Sonic trivia: The reason Sonic can't swim is because the creator Yugi Naka thought hedgehogs couldn't swim.

Just so you know..hedgehogs can swim and they can also float (When they being into spiky little balls). Still, they are not an excellent swimmers just good,naturally.

Poor Sonic, knowing that he can't swim... that would be terrible if Dr. Eggman knew about his fear, he'd probably make Robotropolis fill up with water (or some weird chemicals he's been making) so Sonic won't think about going in to stop him...

Also I'd like to say (following my previous compliment) that while the illustration itself is excellent, the comic-style dot overlay is something I see as a little unnecessary. The particular thing here is the style-- the drawing doesn't really have that comic look; it's very detailed and smooth like the other work in your gallery. So I feel that the dot overlay doesn't really blend in with it/match it so well.Β
Although, this could just be personal preference! It looks like style contradiction (to me at least), but it also feels like a style combination to try something new. Was that your intention with it?Β

*sigh* I'm forced to agree. The halftone is something I hesitated to add, but I felt the image looked very bland without it. I typically don't use textures when I paint, but I was trying to diversify my style using artwork by Creamsouffle and ayamepso as references. openCanvas wasn't designed to paint with textured brushes, so I couldn't really give this the look that I wanted, and I ended up adding the halftone as an attempt to salvage it. Hardly one of my finest moments, but since this is just a stupid quickie, I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Doesn't really look like something I'd call a "quickie". It might have started out as a quick sketch but the end result looks like it has the same or similar quality to your other work. Looks like there was a lot if time put into it with all the details, shading, clouds, etc.
I guess there were some other things too, like Sonic's head being way too high above the surface and in an odd pose (it looks like he's laying on a hard table surface.) Also the splashing of the water is way off of Sonic and the movements he appears to be making.
Then there's Tails... The thing that I see here is that he's standing, instead of floating. This would be okay, but considering Tails' height that would mean the water depth here is only 1 ft or less, or about 1/3 or a meter. This looks a little out of place considering their distance from the land and makes Sonic's situation look even more odd because if the water was that shallow then he wouldn't logically be able to get in that position in the first place.
I think Tails' facial expression isn't so suitable for the situation neither. He has a sort of personal embarrassed look, but it would make more sense for him to be laughing at Sonic in this I think, expressing humor. Because in realistic terms, there's nothing really to be embarrassed about for him. The only people watching from a distance are other friends who they already openly joke around with, so if anything it would make sense or Tails to be laughing at poor Sonic.
No biggie though! I really like where you were going with this and it still looks absolutely outstanding. I hope this can help with future work- it's always handy to think about how one thing can result in another and how things would most believably be in a given situation. Excellent work.

All fair points. It's not often my work is subjected to critical scrutiny, so it's a rare blessing to see someone with artistic perception. I wasn't enthralled by the quality of this pic, which is why I didn't bother asking for a critique; I already knew what was wrong. (Not that I blame you for your remarks or anything.)
