==============
*GiantTiny suggested I should do a tutorial depicting the creation of my CG renders. So after some consideration I decided to give it a try. I am going to show you step by step the process of creating a picture of a teen boy holding a girl in his hand.
Please note the following:
1. This is the first time I'm doing a tutorial.
2. I'm using Daz Studio 3, while most of the users today switched to Daz Studio 4. Most of what I say and do in the tutorial should still apply to DS4, if you keep the slightly different interface in mind. It is possible to use Michael 4 and Victoria 4 in DS4 as well, but there is also a newer generation of figures available.
3. I'm rendering all my images in Luxrender using the plugin called Reality as a bridge between Daz Studio and Lux. This means that I do not cover Daz Studio native lighting, material editing and rendering processes - Reality provides its own lighting props and material room, and rendering takes place in a third-party program.
4. The most important advice I can give to someone who wants to try creating CG pics is to read the manuals. DS3, Reality and Luxrender all have excellent manuals available that cover each and every aspect of image creation. DS4 has an online user guide (the manual is still in the works), so be sure to read it, if you're using DS4.

Hi,
Thank you for the tutorial. For me as a newbie it generated the a impression, how these programs work.
But (perhaps I'm wrong) I think you described the second step. What about the first step?
How to create a new character for example based on a photo you have? Especially the face, the proportions of the body (upper body <--> legs' lenght), the contours of his muscles (abs, bizeps, ...)?
OK, I'm completely new on that stuff. But would be nice to get some more information.
Thank you.

Look into the Parameters tab. It has the Rotate, Translate and Scale dials.

This is awesome! I think I'll try it out sometime now that I might have an idea of what I'm actually doing haha. Could you help explain one thing though? How do I import new models and such into the program? I've tried looking up plenty of tutorials before but always get annoyed since they skip parts and don't explain it well. :/

Daz can handle both Poser and native Daz content. Usually they have separate paths in your folder structure. For example, in my setup all Poser content goes to Daz/Downloads/Runtime while all Daz content goes to Daz/Studio/Content. Each of these paths has to be tagged in Studio's Preferences dialogue. There is a section there that lets you determine which folders Daz should look into when it searches for files. So all I had to do it tag the Runtime folder as "Poser content" and Content folder as "Daz native content".
Now, most of the models you download have an installer which lets you choose the target folder before installation. If you pick the right folder manually a couple of times the installers should guess the right folder afterwards, but it does not hurt to double-check: if the installer has "DS" in its filename, then it should go to the Daz native folder. If the installer has "DPC" in its filename, then it should go to Poser folder. I heard you could just dump everything into Daz Native folder, as it should be clever enough to figure out how to load Poser files from it. But I haven't checked it, I got used to the system I have now
After you install the model you just fire up Daz and look into your content list. There are two ways this list can be organised. Daz Studio 3 defaults to just showing you the list of your folders, and the newly installed files should appear there immediately. I prefer using the "Categories" view - this way you can move the files around manually and assign them to different categories depending on content. The downside is that you need to "scan" your downloads every time after you install something. The new files will appear under the "Unassigned" category, and it is your job to move them to appropriate folder afterwards. You can switch between List and Categories views by clicking the small triangle button in the top right corner of your file loader tab.
I heard Daz Studio 4 has an automatic content tracking system which should help you with file installation and categorizing. But you would have to check DS4 online guide for more info on that.
