The How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Discover Your Duo Contest Begins AT 12:00:00 PM (PT - Los Angeles Time) on MAY 8, 2019 AND ENDS AT 11:59:59 PM (PT - Los Angeles Time) ON MAY 28, 2019 (THE "PROMOTION PERIOD").

  • Entrant must be at least thirteen (13) years old as of May 8, 2019 to be eligible to enter the Contest.
  • Entrant must submit a completed entry of a dynamic duo from the How to Train Your Dragon Universe.
  • ARV of all prizing is $9,317.50 USD.

Twenty-five (25) semi-finalists will be selected from all eligible and qualified entries by a panel of full-time DeviantArt staff, along with an independent judge not affiliated with DeviantArt, on or about June 3, 2019. The First, Second, Third Place Works, using the same criteria and methodology, will be selected from the semi-finalists by How to Train Your Dragon writer and director Dean DeBlois. Additionally, three individuals will be awarded Honorable Mentions.

The semi-finalists will be selected on the basis of:

  • How to Train Your Dragon Universe Compatibility
  • Originality of Concept
  • Artistic Skill; and
  • Success in Portraying the Contest Theme.

  What was once a hidden world for you and what did you discover?
The world of animations, 2d and 3d drawings ... It was a totally unknown world for me since my childhood I watched Disney movies and Nickelodeon series, but I never wondered how they were created until my own curiosity in art I found out that this is what I would like to do ... I discovered the programs and methods used for animation and 2D drawings which was very impressive for me

 ¿Qué fue una vez un mundo oculto para ti y qué descubriste?
El mundo de las animaciones, los dibujos 2d y 3d... Era un mundo totalmente desconocido para mi ya que desde mi infancia miraba peliículas de Disney y series de Nickelodeon sin embargo nunca me preguntaba como es que se crearon hasta que por mi propia curiosidad en el arte me enteré que eso era lo que me gustaría hacer... descubrí los programas y métodos que se utiliza para la animación y dibujos 2d lo cual fue muy impresionante para mí

- A lot of people drew Stormfly and Toothless and it makes so much sense, I just never thought about it

- The world of ancient cultures, like ancient Egypt, Greece, China, and India. They have so many amazing stories, art styles, and customs and they’re very inspiring.

 What is your favorite species of dragon? Light Fury, I love the slim design of the dragon and the female personality they gave. 

 What are some unlikely duos that you have discovered? My uncle used to had a cobra and a camel spider in the same cage while in the army and they were best of friends and never killed each other. 

 What was once a Hidden World for you and what did you discover? When I had my first computer I saw the world of digital artwork and it was like a hidden world for me and seeing this awesome artwork was like finding diamonds.

My favourite species of dragon has to be the Razorwhips.

An unlikely duo i discovered in this story's universe is definitely Snotlout and the Speed stinger, they had a bond going there. In real life it has got to be Herr's Red Hot potato chips with crushed cheese between slices of bread. yum.

Deviant Art was once a hidden world to me, i have discovered immense and great art, this community has rekindled my passion for art, now its my home away from home.

I am so happy this contest made the fandom boom a little and produce so much incredible artwork Thanks to everyone who joined, I loved scrolling through the entries


One thing I'm uncertain about tho...is that some of the entries seem to not display a duo at all? Despite being incredible? They have more than 3 characters on them; sometimes the duo itself isn't the focus.


I wonder if they will get disqualified? It's just it wouldn't be fair if those win first place, but others who read all the rules wouldn't...

Oh wow, I didn't even answer the 3 questions ^^'
- My fav species of dragon are the Night Fury, the Light Fury and their adorable Night Lights. I love their simple yet so beautiful design, and I'm totally in love with their expressions.
- Hiccup and Toothless remain the most unlikely duo of the trilogy
- Well, I'm from Italy. Italy is full of Hidden Worlds. If I have to pick one example, there's this ancient deconsecrated church in my hometown. It holds a good bunch of secrets, mysteries and legends, most of which very creepy and not fully unveiled. Basically a Hidden World sitting in the very center of the town. I found it very fascinating.

1. Stormcutter. Cloudjumper’s design was just incredible! 
2. Gothi and her army of Terrible Terrors will forever be one of the things I’ll always remember about HTTYD.
3. DeviantArt, actually! I never knew about it until I came across RiverSpirit456’s YouTube. I adored her speedpaints and style, and commented on everything! Eventually, I wanted to become more “connected”, so I found her dA. After years of admiring River, I actually got to meet her this year and I couldn’t be happier.
