...I am wondering what counts as a duo, as well. I intended my entry "Unexpected Playmate" as being an interaction between the white dragon baby and the little redhead. The black one with the spot on his snout was supposed to be surprising the little girl. *shrugs* Perhaps my entry was not chosen because of a misunderstanding...? I don't know.

Because in this example, two of these small dragons make one duo: (pardon I can't remember what they're called 
But here, they don't. It's the group of the small dragons that count as one?

I was wondering this as well (I'm the sculptor of the hobgobblers you mentioned.) I considered a duo to be two creatures, but apparently that's not the case. Not that I'm complaining, but I did notice that inconsistency as well. Maybe they should have clarified in the rules.

Yeah i don't get it either as a duo is two characters. and some the the entries i see more than one in there. up to three different dragons or what not. So if there is more that two characters like hiccup-toothless and a nightlight that counts as 3 not 2. Just seems misleading tbh cos that means they didnt follow the rules of what that piece needs to have/represent

Ah well. What I did understand is that realistic painting was what counted, even though they did select a pair that wasn't drawn in that style. Idk.

I'm still glad I did participate, and found time and motivation to work on few fanarts for myself, instead of commissions, and indeed improved my skills and speed of drawing even more.

I did think it would be nice to be noticed, but I can't complain. I made the decision to go for the look I achieved with my entry. In that respect, I'm happy with it because I achieved the look I wanted. As for the judging, well that is always the crap-shoot. What will the judges be looking for? I took my chance and lost. Now, I'm onto other works.
Having said that, I can now address my real reason for wanting to comment. This debate, this conflict, between traditional art and digital art is really nothing new in the history of art. And those who are complaining about the lack of 'traditional works being chosen, well, welcome to my life. As a kid, I took my art nourishment from the offerings of illustrators like N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, and Robert T. McCall. In high school I was being told I should look to newer artists. I should do non-representational work. In college, an art history instructor actually said to the class that anyone who wrote favorably of Wyeth, Pyle or Rockwell in an essay would get a failing mark. I wonder how many artists here know how bitter the divide has been between Illustration and 'Fine" Art. Even within a field, there was contention. Norman Rockwell took heat from other illustrators when it was revealed that he used photographs of his models. Then thee was a new medium that really rocked the boat. One that let artists who used it seem to cut corners. No, I'm not talking about computers, yet. That medium was acrylic paints. So, you see, this argument of Digital vs. Traditional is indeed nothing new.
As I see it, the real advantage digital offers over traditional is time. If one goes looking through a quality museum, you may see fine art paintings that at a glance could compete with digital works. The ability to compete falls short with the time limitation placed on the contest. When you look into the history of the fine art piece, you see that the piece was created over the course of weeks, months, or years. The fine artist works to create the work. Illustrators work to create the image. The illustrators did, and do, work to meet deadlines. To meet those deadlines, they had to learn to take shortcuts and suggest detail. Compared to a 'Fine Art' work, a top of the line 'Illustration' can look crude and unfinished. I have to wonder if a Norman Rockwell painting, or even any of Robert McCall's iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey paintings could compete in a contest in which the majority of entries were digital. The digital medium allows those who have mastered it the ability to do so much more within the limitations of a short deadline.
Okay. Off of my soapbox. I do not presume to have the answers to this debate. To be honest, at this point in my life, i don't care. The working years of my life kept me from really diving into art. Now, I do art for myself. I set challenges for myself. Sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I fail. I learn something from each piece I do. I also learn from looking at the works others post here at DA. I've learned things, and had a lot of fun looking at all the entries posted for this content. Congratulations to those chosen for the next level, but my hat is also off to everyone who took the time to create a work then enter it. Each of you took the challenge and did something. There was e meme I saw on Facebook that applies here. "What is the difference between a master and a beginner? The master has failed more times than the beginner has tried." I'm not a master, but I keep trying.

I realize I may have come off wrong with my message. I was not complaining about the choices made by the DA Staff. I was trying to respond to the comments elsewhere in the overall thread that did seem to me to be going after the DA Staff. Additionally, I was just trying to point out that this debate was not really anything new.
