Okaaay so I have few things to say.
First is of course congrats to all that have been chosen
But there goes the rest: do you even know the topic of your contest? "Name better duo, then Night and White Fury". And here you go, one of the chosen and one of the honorable mentions are White and Night Fury XD Okay
Also you said that you are judging by compatibility (not sure if it's right word) with lore of original series. You even gave cards of characters with their height and stuff and I loved that like woah the artists will be able to create true arts being reflection of original. And then you take art where character is twice smaller compared to the other one then she should be XD
Mind that I do not judge the authors or the arts themselves, I am judging jurie, which had plenty of arts to take choice from, and they didn't even bothered, just took the ones with the most of favs and views and that's just sad.

I see what you're saying. But the thing about sponsored fanart contests which I've learned over the years... is that 99% of the time they pick the most marketable, safest artworks that the studio can use, regardless of the brief of the contest.

They're all incredible pieces, but in this case, Hiccup/Toothless and Night Fury/White Fury would be the most obvious choices to win or qualify into the semi finals

I know right ! "Name better duo, than Night and White Fury" that's in the F*ing description, so that should not be considered OK in the contest.
Although you say they take the most favs, but that's not true, mine has been selected and is way behind my other submission, so no, I think you're wrong there.

It was simply just an encouragement for variety among the entries, not a prohibition. In the end they would still pick a "boring" duo if the quality etc. suit their judgement, for the same reason here there are TWO Stormyfly & Meatlug or TWO Gobber & the creepy purple one semis... 
Been there done that. Sometimes best entries simply happen to feature the most popular character of the available...

there's no doubt that the art is amazing, but does anyone else think it all looks very similar? I personally think it looks like it could of all been done by the same person. 

there's no diversity, it's all just a painting like style, I would love to have seen some artwork with lines make it lol

There's also a chibi and a creepy realism, as well as an oily-shiny.

Yeah, that’s sort of what I was banking on with my piece, though the technical skill was measurably not as strong.

This is kind of how I feel about artist alleys? The rich, painterly style works beautifully in a gallery where the pieces can be framed and set apart, but when the pieces are all clustered right next to each other, they lose their impact and sort of blend.

Holy words. Looks like dA staff likes the same style. I personally find it boring and unfair, especially for a worldwide famous art sharing website. Besides, I wouldn't do a contest where both professionals and beginners/hobbyists can enter, otherwise it's not a fair competition. And that's exactly what they did. Ah well. Last time I enter a contest.

I get your point, but as hobbyist who got selected that just makes me even happier so there is also that.
Although about the lack of difference in style, I kinda agree, but not entirely. There is 4 stylized pieces selected, and I think that's not a lot. In that regards, I'm with you.
But the reason why it turned out like that is also important. DA staff also look at the effort and time put into the piece. And correct me if I'm wrong, but creating a unique stylized, well, style, takes very long, but once you have it, it's way faster to complete a piece than when you draw all the details of realistic painting.
In short less time on the painting if you stylize, therefore, less selected, and only those whose style is really personal and unique. This one for example (El Bosque de las Metamorfalas)

Very happy you made it, your entry is actually one of the first I noticed being very beautiful.
I put a fair lot of time and effort in my stuff. Believe me, I do. If only people bothered noticing that. Yeah, my style is very cartoonish and nothing compared to these big paintings. But there's absolutely no rush and no trick in it. I pay attention to everything. Ah well. I'll keep practicing. I wasn't expecting to find my stuff here, I was just expecting to find more variety, that's all. Most of my fav works aren't even there and they are stunning in every way.
But, to you, best of luck and congrats for having been selected.

I wanna say your pieces are good too, and yes, I can definetely see that you put effort AND time in it.
When I talked about the stylization which takes less time, I wasn't refering to you, like, at all. It was more towards cell shading and anime like styles (which i respect and love by the way, it's just faster to make).
When I see your paintings, I can clearly see that if you keep improving you'll be semi-finalist level in no time. It's already pretty good to be honnest.
Maybe try coloring a bit more your shadows and work on your composition ? Idk, you really don"t have a lot left to learn. Maybe color keys ? If that helps you, I'm glad, if not, I tried.

I undersand where you're coming from, but I don't agree with everything you wrote. The semi-finalists obviously spent years developing their styles and working on their skills. Years ago I was a beginner too and had no chance of winning a contest like this. But I worked hard to improve, and I'm proud of that^^

It's all subjective too! I rooted for many pieces that unfortunatley didn't make it to the semi-finalists.

I hope this doesn't demotivate you from joining other contests though^^ It's good practice after all!

Hey Raide. Happy you made it, you are one of those I'm cheering for actually and you already know that. But I'm not a beginner. Hobbyist yeah, beginner no. For those who have never even bothered looking at my stuff, just wanna say that I've been practicing for years as well. Hours and hours. I never even tried to make it easier in any way. If you zoom my pictures, you can see that I pay a fair amount of attention to anatomy and details, lighting and shading, everything. My style is obviously different than these paintings but trust me that it doesn't take any less effort. An artist should know that if only they bothered looking at my stuff (which they rarely do).
But anyway. Of course this won't demotivate me. Just had a confirmation of what DeviantArt deems important and there's no way they're gonna see me in a contest ever again. I'm also very happy I discovered a lot of beautiful inspiring artworks - most of which aren't even here in the semifinals.

Omg dude, your art is fabulous and it should really have gotten its place in the semi finals!
The fact is, I expected to find way more difference of styles. I wasn't even expecting to find my own stuff (I made three entries), and I'm honestly super happy that 4 or 5 of these made it to the semi finals - I'm still cheering for them But the rest? DeviantArt only notices realistic painting, like it's the only art possible and worth noticing. They can say what they want, but I'm sure that if it was Dean himself to pick the semi finalists he would've chosen way more people and a lot of different styles. He's an animator, he started with hand-drawn 2D animation, so he sure as hell would've given a chance to the more cartoony entries. Ah well. Last time for me too. My HTTYD art has already been featured on the official HTTYD Instagram and some time later they messaged me to say that they love my fanart. I couldn't ask for more tbh. Also, the artists and works I've discovered in this contest have been a true source of inspiration and I'll never thank them enough. I'm just disappointed in how narrow the view of dA judges has been. At least now we know.
Let's go on with our art and absolutely not let this unpleasant event demotivate us, ever!

I have to agree, too.
the art is incredibly awesome, but they look similar.
and my personal favorite, which looked like it could have been from an anime series and had an absolute unique style, isn’t even mentioned.
