Hello,
I'm writing this message because I'm worried that my work wasn't among the others while semi-finalists of the contests were choosed. I submitted it same way as everyone else, by clicking on "submit' button on the main page of contest, including hashtag etc. Sadly, under description of my submitted work, there was no widget with link to the contest page, but there was a hashtag so I thought it is fine. Today I cannot find my work on a "view entries" page and I wish to know why and if it is true that because of it I wasn't included. Here is a link to my entry:

Hi there. As long as your entry has the hashtag #discoveryourduo (which it does) it was seen by the judges.
Eclipse doesn't have contest categories, so not all entries will appear in the "View Entries" page. Judges viewed entries by hashtag.

I think the reason you didn’t have the link is because when you pick the “category” you needed to go to Contests and then there should have been “Discover your duo HTTYD 2019 contest” ^^ hope this helped and you entry is STUNNING by the way ^^

Congrats to the semi-finalist, I'm a bit sad that mine didn't make it but those entries are great !  There were so many incredible submissions. It was a great experience to enter this contest!

Congratulations to all the semi-finalists! But please in the comments, don't undermine the artists who put so much time and effort into their works, they practiced and drew over and over again. (this isn't meant to be "attacking" in any way, but these artists also worked hard and deserve recognition too)

In addition, please don't be discouraged that you didn't make it, a lot of amazing pieces didn't, likely just because there was a limit on who would be chosen. Mine didn't make it, but I'm glad I entered, it was challenging and very fun for me, but to everyone out there, please don't give up. I loved looking at all your art and I hope you all continue to do what you love.

I totally agree but they are at a stage where they are the top of there form. But from an artist trying to progress and since you have to be 13yrs and older. It's a bit unfair that people who also have submitted their work have tried there best too. It seems unfair that 23 entries are digital as well not even one traditional piece there. Cos me and others cant even afford a tablet but have to full on traditional ways.

Yeah these artists have practiced hundreds of hours to master that but what about other people who have put hundreds of hours in painting or crafting. It's like DA LOVES digital like its the only type there is.

Not seeing pieces that aren't traditional or even crafted will discourage other artists that you will only get a chance IF you are entering with a digital piece.

I entered cos i thought that no one hasn't done it in water-color and coloured pencil and i love that medium too. In my mind that stood out of the rest but seeing the semi-finalists its sending a message that all the people that have done it traditional is a waste.

Now if they where a mix of different ages. Some traditional and some digital. Some amazing and some that are ok quality but for that person its there best work then i think people would be less upset about it.

dA's contests have always been like that and that's why I haven't joined a single one since Wacom Bring Your Vision to Life: Dreams Contest . That was the first and only time I've joined and ever since that I realized that even if I had a chance of winning, it wasn't worth the effort.
These contests are essentially abusing artists for commercial purposes of the franchise owners. This is all marketing and free advertisement for that new Dream Works movie. Free advertisement through the hands of artists who hope for a chance of getting paid for the free work they did for a company. 
The whole concept is disgusting.

Having "ok quality" as semi-finalist would be an insult to the those with better artworks who didn't get picked. It's a contest, not an exposition of community's work. The point is to have *The best* artwork possible.
Therefore forcing a mix of ages makes no sense.
Sure they did say people that are 13 can enter, but that doesn't mean any 13 years old guy can win, it means, "if you're a 13 years old genius, you can have a chance to win, if you are that age but not a genius, well go ahead, have fun but you won't get picked cause we only take what's good enough".


The mix of media though would be nice, but as the others say, there are a lot less and they're for the most not as good/interesting. Being picked out of pity just because there is a quota to not have people complaining would be a total insult.

And that just you being salty. Your work is good, and yeah the use of water-color is a plus, it's original. But it is nowhere near as good as the semi-finalists work.
I am one of them and I feel honored to have been chosen because I know my art cannot compete with the best ones.
Look at your piece and ask yourself this.
Can it stand out to this HTTYD3 Duo Contest- do not touch my daughter ?
I asked myself that and I know I'm not as good.
I don't want to be mean to you, I want to be honest. Continue drawing and improving in traditional and someday you'll have that level, but for now stop insulting DA staff for doing their job.

See if i was one of them artists and say a mediocre piece won or one of the 25 i wouldn't be bothered. Cos i know i have a level of skill that is better then that person but i would be happy for that person too cos that's a huge confidence boost too. Seeing the flaws even though it not amazing. I was trying to say seeing flaws as something of a positive instead of 'oh its not perfect you have no chance' no one is perfect and no piece is perfect too. Hut seeing art that for some may look mediocre is refreshing too see.

I see your point, and I agree that an artist who's selected wouldn't really care that a mediocre piece has been selected.
But an artist that is obviously way more experienced and did a piece that he clearly think is way better (not only in the art, but also storytelling composition and all that), then he'd get pissed and that's normal because he deserved that place more than the one who got it.

I think what they should have done, is create a category "remarquable" with a small prize or just exposition, where they put those pieces of not very experienced artists who put their soul in their painting.
Like that, I think everyone would be happy. Do you agree ?

Yeah i totally agree with you. As well as if a huge money is up for grabs then its should be aimed at advanced artists and smaller prizess for people who are progressing to be better

I tried to find traditional entries... I know the keyword method is flawed here BUT it did show only few pieces... and I found only one that could actually compete with the semifinals: (what coudl potientially loose it is that it could be more vivid in colours and more contrasty - a simple filter would help, but it was not used, so... Even if I would still pick it, it could be a reason why it wasn't, aside to possible overlook)
Really, with just one traditional entry of a comparable quality, how do you expect a few traditional semis?

I saw this tagged, I'm very flattered you think so. I was at least hoping Dean would see my art even if I didn't win. I will add that I didn't intend for it to be super colorful, I don't think that's necessary in every artwork. The setting was cold north seas and I was inspired by realistic traditional ocean oil paintings. The dragons themselves are also coincidentally two that don't have a lot of vibrant colors. Though I also would never use a filter on a painting, I don't think anyone would. Just adding the context.

I saw another comment with this tagged and i was like blown away. You should be proud to produce something soo amazing and beautiful. It's a shame really. A few people in the comments have said there isn't any amazing traditional pieces that are par with the semi-finalists and i was like there are a few ive seen that are. I didnt see yours but my word yours should be one of the 25. Traditional work like yours and many more needs to be notest more and appreciated

Tbh i didn't see that but oh my that piece is just breathtaking. And i can tell that took ages to do. I do get that it isn't vivid but that's the best thing about it. Digital can get away from a lot of things that traditional cant. You can remove mistakes and make the colors vivid. But that's why i love traditional so much and why i always want to see more of it been nominated. It's so organic and has much more emotion in it. Like its alive. But digital looks the same and as many people said. You put them all together and they all look very similar. The brush strokes and shading etc.

I understand that traditional can take much longer. You do a mistake which can set you back for a few minutes to even hours.

Dont get me wrong digital is fantastic at what people can achieve. People can achieve insane levels of detail but i always see it as an easy way of producing a piece of work then pen to paper or paint to a canvas.

Sorry to butt in, but I don't think it's so much that DA loves digital but rather there are significantly more digital entries AND they are often better than the traditional ones.  If there were a bunch of breath taking traditional entries I'm certain we'd see them in the semifinalists too.

Yeah true some of the traditional pieces may not have been great but that person has tried there best in what level their skill is at at that moment.

People may not have entered a traditional piece cos they know that digital will always be superior. Most art contests ive joined and ive seen everyone who's been semi finalists and that all digital.

Contests like this where they state that any style or medium can be used and you use your heart and soul to produce something your proud of. Only to see every or nearly everyone being picked digital is off putting for people that love traditional ways of creating something.

I didn't enter because I can't get a tablet. And I knew traditional wouldn't make it at all. Even if I put my whole heart and soul into it. But I draw HTTYD nearly every day anyway.

Congrats to all of the artistes for getting through but what annoys me about these competitions is the fact that 23 are all digital and two hand-made. Where is the traditional pencil on paper entries ? There where a few including mine. It just puts us traditional artists off as every competition ive seen and some ive participanted in has always been the case. It's always digital art that always get picked ? Why say that you can use any medium and techniques when nearly every entry that got picked were digital ? Cos if thats the case then instead letting Deviantart pick. Let Dean pick the 25 he likes.

Im not ripping down the artists that have been picked but to have spent long hours on a piece and was over the moon how it came out because ive had a huge break from drawing thinking i might have a chance cos i followed the rules and what was stated too produce and what it can be made in i was excited but i knew deep down i wouldn't get picked cos i knew that digital artists will get pick cos they always do and its sad too see.

Now you could say well you should of done it digitally. Well i cant afford that and in my opinion. I prefure traditional as its what it is. Traditional, it shows mistakes and its so organic too. 

I've read other comments and i agree. At least have some traditional or have a traditional entry and digital.

All of the digital art chosen is very nicely done, but I was wondering about that too since almost all of the finalists used the same medium.  I was also one of the contestants that had an entry using traditional artwork.

I'm far from the best, but I think it's not about the medium. If digital works happen to be better, then they're chosen, that's all.
If you manage to do better traditionally, then it's perfect and you're going to be chosen.
No need for quotas and things like that.

I agree that Dean should have picked the 25 he liked though, but that's a serious amount of job and that's not his, so I understand that they choose to do it like that.

And you know maybe He'll look at some other submission, even if they aren't part of the 25, just by curiosity. If I were him, that's what I would do anyway.


Also, sorry but what do you call "two hand-made"? I don't get it.
