It's so colourful and full of life, with dynamic poses and style! I can't believe it wasn't considered.

A majority of the drawings that were chosen lack colour and personality.

I definetely agree with you, because it's very unclear with these finalists what was the goal: the design, or concept, or amount of detail. How you crafted it, though?

Thanks for your kind words I don't know what was the goal either. I thought the creatvity was also important, and at least they notice more traditional works but it seems i was wrong.


First i drew the design than i drew all the parts on silver plates. After that i sawed the parts, filed and embossed them. And than soldered the layers and parts together. And finally i abraded and polished the necklace after setting the stones. It took several hours to make it.

Even if i didn't managed to get among the semi-finalists i don't regret it, at least i have a pretty necklace to wear

These contests aren't fair because only people who have professional digital art experience end up going decently far. Why not have contests select people who aren't as skilled as them? That's why I refuse to enter, it's rigged.

THAT would be stupid and truly unfair.
If you want to be a winner in such a huge and serious contest someday, work your ass off on your overall artistic skill (anatomy, composition, colour, light, perspective etc. +overall effect) instead of whining out of envy just because you've been lazier and less serious about art than the select lot. There are plenty of free resources online to guide you, it's not like secret knowledge only chosen/rich ones can access!
Sorry for putting it so harshly and bluntly, but the truth IS this harsh and blunt.
And yes, it's not a personal comment towards you - I'm lazier than them too. If you'll learn to be truly honest with yourself, you'll be happier and less pretentious.


It's a pity they picked no traditional piece, true, but idk, maybe there are simply no equally proffessional traditional artists who take part in contests anymore and they just had no competing traditional entry to feature along, didn't check. I'd like to see a traditional drawing and/or painting featured, but only if it IS actually of the quality the rest semifinalists is OR it would be unfair! (and yes, traditional art CAN compare to digital, it's possible, just fewer and fewer artists choose traditional, hence you don't see that a lot if at all)
If there's anything ufair, it's that they probably didn't manage to pick the best of the best because there were SO many entries some more brilliant ones could be overlooked, but in general, these semifinals do deserve it even if they aren't perfect (because they aren't! and that's normal) but you can see how much work was put into them and into the learning process before they could be made.
If you were in their shoes and your comment actually happened, imagine how unfairly treated you'd feel then! All the years of your hard work and efforts would loose to a lazy beginner who didn't even bother to learn about anatomy, light, etc... I bet everythign that you'd sing a different song about what's unfair.

I agree with you. It took me weeks in order to get my first attempt but I had to start all over on a new drawing because the first one was overused in the drawing entries I've seen so far. The final piece took me about two weeks to fully complete but it was all a waste because of the digital artists. 

DA should appreciate traditional artists too. This day's society is just manipulated by computer software with expensive programs such as Photoshop and everyonr forgets whete everything all started first and that was the art of pencils and paper as well as canvases. It is unfair to me as well as the other people that have done the traditional pieces so far.

It’s an art contest, I’m afraid. It wouldn’t be fair to those that have spent their entire life studying and days creating a piece to be beaten by a beginner child. Then, why would anyone want to improve their art?
  I say, these competitions stand as a motivator for lower level artists. With enough practice, you can get there.

Great work to all of the semi-finalists! I entered the contest myself but I knew that I had virtually no chance after looking at the other entries. I'm still fairly new to Photoshop and I realize that I still have a lot more to learn when it comes to my digital art skills. If you have any suggestions on what I could've done better, please let me know - and don't be afraid to sound harsh.
