The How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Discover Your Duo Contest Begins AT 12:00:00 PM (PT - Los Angeles Time) on MAY 8, 2019 AND ENDS AT 11:59:59 PM (PT - Los Angeles Time) ON MAY 28, 2019 (THE "PROMOTION PERIOD").

  • Entrant must be at least thirteen (13) years old as of May 8, 2019 to be eligible to enter the Contest.
  • Entrant must submit a completed entry of a dynamic duo from the How to Train Your Dragon Universe.
  • ARV of all prizing is $9,317.50 USD.

Twenty-five (25) semi-finalists will be selected from all eligible and qualified entries by a panel of full-time DeviantArt staff, along with an independent judge not affiliated with DeviantArt, on or about June 3, 2019. The First, Second, Third Place Works, using the same criteria and methodology, will be selected from the semi-finalists by How to Train Your Dragon writer and director Dean DeBlois. Additionally, three individuals will be awarded Honorable Mentions.

The semi-finalists will be selected on the basis of:

  • How to Train Your Dragon Universe Compatibility
  • Originality of Concept
  • Artistic Skill; and
  • Success in Portraying the Contest Theme.

Last day, so I'll post this one last time. There's been a bit of a divide with the last movie; Quite a few people (Though only a small percentage, it seems) unsatisfied with this franchise's send-off - and rightly so. I don't mean to spread negativity and groundless hate, I grew up with these movies and characters, and never would I have imagined not liking them and an entire installment. I think anyone has the right to know what DreamWorks actually delivered, and what lies behind all the amazing visuals and emotional scenes. So for anyone curious, or anyone who might've felt the same but cannot put it into words, here's a 10k word essay detailing only some of the story's huge problems and implications, and how it went against everything that was built up over 8 years with poor reasoning:

I do not understand why all the drawings have the same style of how to train your dragon, you are supposed to be looking for the originality and the application of those creatures to a new world (yours)

What is your favorite species of dragon?:
Night Fury, they're the perfect mix of scary and adorable and they will always be my favorites. Being black is just a bonus.

What are some unlikely duos that you have discovered?
I'd say the Light Fury&Hiccup, The White Night Light&Nuffink, and Grimmel&Hiccup because they're polar opposites and both very intelligent, Grimmel is what hiccup could have been if he killed Toothless all those years ago in the woods. But of course, Hiccup&Toothless, not very unlikely is definitely my favourite.

What was once a Hidden World for you and what did you discover?
Everything art-related, until I finally got into it, and now it's my way to express how I feel.

    My favourites are the night fury and light fury I really love the elegance of them.


2. What are some unlikely duos that you have discovered?

    In the movies i really like the duos of the dragons and sheeps. They are so cute especially when the sheeps try to disguise themselves as dragons

    I'm a big dreamer since i was a little kid. I always imagine fantasy worlds with dragons and flying etc These imaginations helped me to discover my own world in arts.

    Stormcutter. The owl-like dragon that have four wings. The best for precision and communication.


What are some unlikely duos that you have discovered?

    Stormcutter and Hobgobbler. Ideal for surprise missions: Stormcutter for localization and Hobgobbler for destruction.   



What was once a Hidden World for you and what did you discover?

    The digital illustration. I worked with design for a decade when i've made my first illustrations.

1. Strike class: Night Fury is my favorite species

2. Vlaka and Snotlout, I did not expect that duo at all

3. For me a hidden world would be an ancient and great medieval castle abandoned between mountains and great forests, and what I discovered was the fortress of San Agustine and the town in Florida, I went to that town and to the fortress on a travel (for me it was a discovery)

This is my entry:



1. Night furies because I really liked how the animators mixed a lot of animals (cat, bat, dog, etc.)  in order to create a believable creature.
2. In the movie, Valka and Astrid. In my life, cheese and guava paste. Didn't know they could taste sooo good together.
3. The world of 3D art. After learning modelling, texturing, rigging, etc. I started to watch animated movies with a new critical perspective, and it has changed my life for the better.

Wish my schedule had worked more in my favor.  I've had this contest bookmarked for ages, but between my current projects and all of the fabulous, detailed entries here I don't think I'll participate.

 What is your favorite species of dragon?  I love Night Furies, and the titan/alpha dragons, but I also have a huge soft spot for Whispering Deaths.  <3

 What are some unlikely duos that you have discovered?  Myself and a good number of my friends.  Fish sticks and maple syrup, is a good one, too.  Death metal and cute animals is also a fun one.

 What was once a Hidden World for you and what did you discover?  Probably DeviantArt, or the animation section of YouTube.  So many wonderfully talented artists all over the world to connect with.

1. Nightfury!

2. Apples and Peanut Butter. It always just sounded like a weird combination so I never tried it until my aunt convinced me to a few weeks ago. I was surprised how they actually taste good together.

3. The Internet. It was something of a mystery when people at school were using the internet in the late 90s. At the time, I only knew you needed a computer and a modem, I had no clue how it actually worked. (At the time my family had a 486 and no modem). So, when I did manage to connect to the internet using a Windows 98 PC, it was like a hidden world that had been discovered. A friend I had met online told me of this art website called deviantArt. ^^

I'd definetly go for the Nightfury and the Lightfury/ For their mysteriousness and the abillity to just *poof* ♥ I love mysterious dragons!

I think I stumbled over a small street in London that was filled with thrilling flowers/ shapes/ shades/ colors and an oldschool coffeeshop. And I found it while I proceeded...
