Description *Note: Not Vector Art. See media description*

Second now in what I guess has become a series of Halloween themed pieces (Meow [link] being the first). Girl in a devil costume sitting on a pitchfork. Cliche, I know, but it's part of the iconography

*Edit* T-shirt now available courtesy Cafepress.com [link]

Medium: Original sketch drawn over in Photoshop with the pen tool, not vectors since the lines and shapes rasterize. It is similar process, but by devart definitions, anything that rasterizes is not vector art. Details added with brush tool.

i love the curves, especially around the hips. you have such great control of this style, and it shows a lot here.
i might have to get a print of this soon

lol, you know, it's funny, people often ask why I draw girls so much more often than guys and that's exactly why: there's so many more fun curves and shapes to play with and balance. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the male form, it's just a lot more straight lines.

I love this style of art. It allows you to concentrate more on the shape and movement, so you don't have to worry about getting lost in too much unnecessary detail. You pull it off well.

What is this style called? I love it to pieces but I do'nt know the name of it. I started trying to imitate it a bit after seeing the style on some of Brian Setzers CD covers and those fashion magazines and I love it in all it's simplicity and bright colors... Your devil girl uses this style perfectly (whatever it's called). I wouldn't mind having this on a coffee mug or something..

I call it just a retro style. It's based heavily on influences like Shag, the old Ward Kimbal Disney cartoons, and even a bit of Bruce Tim adn Paul Dini. I think I'd even have to toss a little Mary Blaire in there, but those are all good people to look at if you're wanting to branch that way

not really. Some people classify it with pop art, but I don't don't feel that's entirely accurate.

She looks awesome! I love the curvy style to this - I can totally see this on a t-shirt. Something like this would definitely sell well. Her eyes are my favorite part.

It's sad that you have to put such a disclaimer about the rasterizing. Why can't people just enjoy the work without making a stink about the technicalities? That's a technique I've been thinking of trying and I'll definitely make a mental note to remember that though it LOOKS like vector art, it's not! Great work!

Aww thank you I will be making them available as prints here at Dev, but I was thinking of making some other products available at CafePress, but then I have to choose just one piece for each item available unless I want to pay for a 'premium shop'

sargeras [2004-09-08 20:22:57 +0000 UTC]

very nice work. i like the style, and the pose is great. in any case, photoshop pen tool does create real vectors, if you load the .psd file into illustrator its just the same as an .ai file. Just in photoshop it rasterizes it just to display on the screen, but the vector data is hiding behind the scenes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoblinQueeen In reply to sargeras [2004-09-08 20:30:18 +0000 UTC]

But I don't have illustrator and as it is rasterized when I do it, by dev definitions, it is not vector art. I am not saying it is not a nearly identical process, the comment is just to curb the comments saying "This is in the wrong category, etc" when it is not.

I do appreciate the insight, though, and if I ever do get illustrator, I'll have to check it out

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sargeras In reply to GoblinQueeen [2004-09-09 01:55:16 +0000 UTC]

yup i see where youre coming from. i use photoshop to finish off all the vectors i do. which is how i think most people do the final touching up and resizing and saving to jpg. so yeah, i dont think youd run afoul of people by submitting to the vector section. anyways, i just checked your gallery and stuff and its real cool, ill probly come back and browse through or watch

GoblinQueeen In reply to sargeras [2004-09-09 17:47:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Unfortunately for me, the vast majority of my work crosses some line or other, but I the guidelines as strictly as I can.

And thank you for the watch very much appreciated. I'm way behind in going through galleries, but I will make it over to your's eventually
