Description Can you tell I've been reading Sandman again lately?

Well, certain people complain that I go on and on too much in my descriptions, so I'll do my best to keep this brief This started as just a sketch of Death (most notably from the Sandman comics, but popping up here and there in the Vertigo universe) in more of a Victorian look, but then I wanted to get Cavendish (her teady bear) into it, too, so from there, the whole scene kindof built itself.
Please forgive the historical mismatch that is her dress. That style bustle doesn't really go with the styling in the bodice or skirt, but ever since I saw it on an old dress at LACMA years ago, it would seem I work it in whenever I can and yes, it would be difficult to bend like that in a corset, but that's what artistic license is for. She is Death, after all

What was that I said about keeping this short...? Oh well, I'll leave figuring out all the symbolism to you, have fun and enjoy

Medium: Lineart brown drafting lead on vellum, painting done in Photoshop and Painter.

The character of Death is copyright Neil Gaiman.

I highly endorse Sandman, very good stuff. 'Dream of a Thousand Cats' I think is my favorite. I think that one is in Dream Country

How does one go about getting a commision done? I just had an idea that I would very much like someone like you to draw.

How's this: Part 1: Death is reading Gilbert Keith Chersterton's "In Defence of Skeleton's", to one of her siblings. When she finishes, she leaves for London, dressed as she is here. Before making her stop, she detours at a monestary, and asks her brother Dream, to wisper something into the ear of the Monk known famously at the time as "The Saint of Hyde Park", Brother McNabb. McNabb rushes to Mr. Chesterton's resedence, heeding Dream's whisper, and finds Gilbert dying. He comforts his wife Frances, and then says the last rites. (I think Belloc was there, but I need to do more resurch.) When he breathes his last, his spirit rises, greets Death as "Sister Death" in the manner of St. Francis of Asisi, and politly bows, taking off his spirit hat. Charmed, she elegantly offers her arm, and he takes it. They walk off together, but on the way to the Silver City, he notices a lovely place that he had visited before in his dreams, especialy on nights after he had been thinking hard about the wealfare of the common man. He askes most politly if they could briefly visit, and she agrees. He askes her what this splendid place was. "Fiddler's Green", she answers. Just before they leave, he slips on something, and leaves an impression in the soil, an impression that in time will consume the soil of Fiddler's Green with an obsession, until about fifty years later, it takes that great man's form for itself, and become Gilbert Green.

What do you think?

Following the death of G.K. Chesterton . . . as soon as Father Vincent had read the Gospel for the day, his first remarks were, "Chesterton is dead," and again, "Chesterton is dead. . . A great Englishman and one of the greatest thinkers and writers of our time. His writings will be even better appreciated in years to come than they are now." A Saint in Hyde Park, E.A. Siderman.

I doubt that you're going to see this note buried deep in the pile but I just wanted to mention that I think comments on the art are fantastic. I mean if a person doesn't like them then they don't need to read them! But I like to read them. It's fun to know what was on the artist's mind when the pic was made. And why the pic was made and all the rest!
