Description The last of my three entries for 's annual OC Contest.

Fandom Source: "The Legend of Zelda"
Name: Morg the Moblin
Age: Unknown
Family: Megan, a young orphan girl he rescued; he views her as his "ward", and is slowly but surely starting to see her as his cub.
Strengths: Durable body and thick hide. Extreme physical strength. Ruthlessly effective with a variety of hand-held weapons. Highly determined and unyielding.
Weaknesses: Poor eyesight, like all Moblins. Bulky and slow. Quick to anger, poor at handling his emotions. Internally struggles with his vicious instincts.
Special Abilities: Preternaturally strong sense of touch, smell, hearing. Highly sensitive to changes in wind and weather. Spear is enchanted, allowing it to return to his hand instantaneously whenever it is knocked away.
Relationships With Canon Characters: Actively despises Gannondorf, believing him responsible for the subjugation of the Moblin race, but he also fears him for what he might do to Megan if he ever caught her. He views Link, Hero of the Crown, and Zelda, Chosen of the Crown, as naive at best, and distrusts Link for how willingly he fights other Moblins, but ultimately sees them as the best chance of defeating Gannondorf and thus granting the Moblin race a chance at redemption.

Biography:
It is the Seventh Age of Hyrule, a time of peace. The eve of Princess Zelda's coronation draws near. And dark shadows are gathering...

A plain Moblin grunt of little note, Morg has always felt his species was capable of more than the simple savage life of aimless evil they have led ever since Gannondorf added them to his forces. Yet with no clear alternative to it in sight, he had gone along with it most of his life.

Until the day he found Megan.

It was a simple hunting trip he had been chosen to lead. Easy prey, he had been told. Yet when he found that prey was a simple, helpless little girl with no parents to protect her, Morg could no longer keep his silence. He thus rescued Megan from the other Moblins, taking her under his wing. The other Moblins, however, are so enraged by his act of defiance that they vow to hunt him down 'til he AND Megan are dead. And so Morg and Megan began their exodus, traveling all across the lands of Hyrule to keep one step ahead of the Moblins hunting them.

And then, one day, while hiding out in the shadows of Din's Sanctuary in the lands of Eldin...

Megan was waiting for Morg back at the sanctuary while he scoped the landscape for any sign of food, when a young swordsman garbed in green travelling with a woman who wore the Royal Family's colors attacked him. Though Morg did his best to defend himself, the swordsman proved too skilled, and would have killed Morg if not for Megan's intervention. Explaining their story to the swordsman, Megan begged him to spare Morg's life. The Royal woman, who called herself Zelda, agreed on the swordsman Link's behalf. In exchange for his mercy, Megan revealed a secret entrance into the Sanctuary she had discovered which would help Link and Zelda in their quest to retrieve Din's Fire, the Eternal Jewel which lurked inside the Sanctuary.

This would be the first of many times Morg's path would cross with those of Link and Zelda....

As usual, you have great composition... Eyes go to the important stuff right away. I like the saturated but varyingly bright colors, too, it makes the spikes on his armor stand out. (What is this coloring, is this gouache too?) From the thumbnail, I didn't notice Megan, and you'd imagine that's how they look at a distance, too. (I'd say in a crowd, but I have this feeling they don't end up in any. XD)

I love their faces, I feel like I know them a bit just looking at them. And her little hand in that giant fist is gosh squee adorable. You know how parents can let their kids hang from their arm? I think he could have her hanging from one of his fingers. X3
Makes me wonder things like how did Megan react to Morg at first? She must have understood what they were there for, but she must have been scared and disoriented, too. Even if he stepped in and stopped someone else from killing her, she might not have caught what was going on. (I just like to imagine the moment she realizes this huge guy is actually her wall against danger now. Wonder what he feels the first times she isn't afraid of him, but looks to him for safety.)

...I think that if the split of his right hoof was more to the (viewer's) left, it would match the rest of the leg's pose better, and it seems odd for the left leg to bend where it does. I would have let the heel end up closer to the base of his tail, if that makes any sense. (I wish I could redline when I try to describe these things >_<.)
But I'm impressed by his face - faces with that kind of shapes always give me trouble, and heaps of it. >_0 The perspective in general (including those nice overlaps) looks great.

As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your thorough comments. <3

Generally speaking, my colors tend to break down like this: foreground objects/characters are done with markers, background objects/characters are done with gouache. In this case, it's more gouache than markers; Morg himself, the head of his spear (from the ribbon upwards), and Megan's skin are all marker colors, while everything else-the handle of the spear, the foreground, and the background, Megan's clothes-is gouache.

Very glad you like the faces; Morg's in particular was a real challenge to get just right. I may have to sketch out that idea of Megan hanging off one of his fingers, too, that's great. XD ^_^
And yeah, I'd agree it'd take Morg AND Megan some time to get used to their newfound relationship. It really would take some doing for Megan to realize the big, scary monster-man can be trusted; even after she comes to recognize that intellectually, instinctively it'd take more time for her to conquer that visceral fear. Likewise, Morg is not used to having someone to take care of instead of simply to kill, and doesn't quite know how close he should allow himself to get to her at first. But, much like the relationship between Belle and the Beast from the Disney version of "Beauty and the Beast", I believe time together would help those discomforts ease out.

Yeah, the right leg in general was a problem area for me. XD; For some odd reason, my brain can be very asymmetrical at times, and so while I was able to handle the abnormal bends and hoof placement on the left leg, the right one threw me for a loop in the worst way, and I suddenly had a lot more trouble keeping track of where to put what.

Again, thank you so much for all your lovely comments. ^3^

You always put thought into your comments on my art, and you have art that begs commenting I would talk more about it if I didn't have such trouble phrasing myself half the time.

One thing that's not limited to this picture: most of your outlines are the same thickness. If you played around with line weight, that might make background items more "solid" and make the characters stand out even better. (For instance through giving them a slightly thicker outline where they "border" to the rest of the image, and /or making the lines of living characters softer and smoother than the lines of rocks, stairs, weapons etc. Even a character like Morg has more organic shapes than for instance his spear and armor, and line weight can help emphasize that.)

Easy to see how Megan would tag along at first because she's afraid of what will happen if she doesn't, and because she doesn't really have any other option. And she looks more alert than anything, so I would imagine her mind's understanding of Morg's intentions helps even before her instinctive fear starts to fade. She's bound to notice what he does, and doesn't do.
Can't help but think Morg would worry about accidentally hurting her. With her spindly legs and arms (especially compared to his), in his place I'd be worried about breaking something off accidentally. The whole idea holds a lot of potential for interaction.

I recognize that with the legs; sometimes anatomy falls into place on its own in one part, and another just won't. Helps to imagine the whole body as connected, jointed blocks, to me.

Aww shucks. <3 I think you phrase yourself magnificently, for what that's worth.

The line-weight thing is something people online and off have pointed out about my work for a few years now. Currently, I try to work around it by using felt-pens of various thicknesses, but it doesn't seem to be working. Generally speaking, though, I try to use thicker lines for foreground objects instead of background; I prefer the viewer's attention be on characters 'n' such. Still, I'll definitely keep working on it, and I think your advice will prove most helpful.

Yes, I think Megan, being a life-long orphan, would have learned by this point to be highly aware of her surroundings, and of who she can and cannot trust. Likewise, I think Morg, knowing that he's stepping into the world of non-violent interaction with a human, would almost be overly cautious about how he treated her, lest he accidentally do to her what he was trying to save her from in the first place.

*nod* Good advice to consider vis a vis anatomy.

Well, some of my replies before have taken hours to write. Communication was never easy for me. I just practice a lot these days.

I'm really only starting to learn about line weight myself, but I'd say try varying thickness within the same line, not just between characters /backgrounds. (I do much the same with backgrounds though; you may have noticed how I like to make backgrounds lineless if I can.)

[link] had some good basic ideas, and...
[link] talks about digital inking, but the points about line weight (and some other things) still apply to traditional art as well.

You must have communicated that somehow, because I was already picturing Morg looking at Megan and thinking How do I pick it up without breaking it? <:c

Practice makes perfect, right?

Ah, cool, links. I'll definitely look into those further, thank you so much. ^_^

If I had to guess how it came through, I think it's the clear, protective nature of Morg's pose combined with the obvious difference in size and strength between them. The latter tells us that such a consideration would be necessary for the relationship to work, the former tells us such a consideration would be on Morg's mind. ^3^

Practice makes better.

They are good help.

All you said, and that he's holding only the fingers of her hand. He could hold her a lot clumsier / rougher considering his own likely range of touch until then.

XD Fair enough; practice makes better, then. ^_^ I actually should hold on to that one, it's pretty useful.

Another good observation about the hand-holding, actually. That one's almost unintentional; like, I meant for it to look gentle on Morg's part, but the precise connection you made didn't fully occur to me 'til now. You're quite good at digging that sort of stuff up out of my work. ^3^

Can't remember where I heard it, but I liked it! After all, it's a neverending process.

Oh but that's because your work is so fun to dig in!

This guy rocks! I love the way you drew both characters. Morg's face and marking really stand out to me. Actually, both of their faces bring a lot of life to their characters.

Very glad you like. ^_^ Morg was a really tricky beast to pull off, actually, precisely because keeping track of the many details that comprised his face, body, and markings while making sure they all fit together properly was quite the challenge. Megan, by contrast, was all simplicity, so they balanced each other nicely. X3 Thank you for the comment.
