A Pzkpfw-IV Ausf-D from the 2nd Panzer Division during the invasion of France, May 1940. The vehicle displays an unusual combination of symbols having its divisional emblem ( two adjacent yellow circles) under a yellow rhomboid symbol with a numeral five alongside (the number five denotes that the vehicle belongs to the 5th Company). This combination is found on the front hull (port side) and superstructure (port side); and is probably also found on the vehicle’s rear hull or superstructure. Strangely the it does not appear that the vehicle has any other markings except for a simple white balkankreuz outline stenciled on the superstructure sides and rear. Although covered in a thin coat of dirt and grime, the vehicle possesses a typical early war two tone camouflage pattern with a base coat of dark gray (dunkelgrau Nr.46) over which large dark brown (dunkelbraun Nr. 45) blobs have been painted. Little is known about the official markings for tanks of the 2nd Panzer Division during 1939 and 1940, however, it is known that its vehicles did not appear to be equipped with detachable rhomboid plates ( for tactical numbers) like other panzer divisions at the time, instead they had rhomboid symbols painted onto the front and rear of their vehicles as shown above.
