Description 'With mounting troubles in the kingdom and the threat of civil war looming ever closer the squires of Oakvale put a large sum of money into hiring dwarven stonemasons to improve their defences. After giving them a hefty budget and outlining their requirements the squires were called away by their duties and left their home for some time.
When the King miraculously recovered everyone hoped the civil war between his sons was now averted, alas the Kings recovery had more to do with dark sorcery than any miracle and soon the once benevolent king became a brutal tyrant and his squabbling sons the least of the kingdoms troubles.
While the squires fought for the true rulership of the kingdom under the young princess, the small community of Oakvale was left mostly on its own to weather the sudden war. Thankfully Dwarvern engineers and masons also make for decent soldiers and by the time the 'knights' of Oakvale' returned triumphant they found the settlement of Oakvale a little singed but otherwise unharmed to welcome them home.'

It turns out that if you pay a bunch of dwarves to build you fortifications and then leave them on retainer while you bugger off to defend the realms they can do some pretty impressive work. The settlement of Oakvale is now a thriving community of around 300, although its population are still mostly farmers and refugees there are now a wide variety of specialist tradesmen set up behind those impressive walls along with a large dwarven contingent who have decided to settle down here.

As a reward for my players saving a princes life they were made squires of the court and the isolated hamlet of Oakvale was given to them provided they took adequate care of it. It was in short a dump, however it was their dump and over the years that followed they turned it from a half derelict collection of buildings into a bustling fortified community.
As I'm practicing with my new surface it seemed like a fun project to take these old sketches and turn them into a progression of a small growing fantasy community.
This third sketch is roughly after three years as owners of the community.

As ever feel free to grab for your own games.
