It's an interesting piece, but really intriguing because the spirits carrying away his soul appear to be demons. Yet, he doesn't seem to be afraid: Rather, he seems at peace or even relieved to see them taking him.
Is that a commentary on choosing damnation over salvation as an act of free will? That wouldn't work by canonical Christian theology, since Hell and damnation are clearly enslavement and punishment. Choosing that is choosing to remain in the bondage of sin.
Then again, the spirits themselves don't appear overly malicious. Dark robes and horns aside, they kind of remind me of Valkyries. They're also lifting him up with hands, rather than pulling him down with claws. I'm getting a kind of "dark salvation" vibe. I think that this wouldn't be taking place in a typical "heaven or hell" cosmology. A champion of a darker, or more primal god? One interested in martial skill rather than moral integrity?
