Description
I had a lot of fun working on this piece, it's a bit of fanart for the game Valor. Had the help of some awesome artists whose feedback helped me a lot and got me back to thinking about the fundamentals of Illustration. So if you recognize a similarity between another piece I posted recently, just think of it as a measure of how much I've been improving lately. Thanks guys!Related content

Wow, that's awesome. Love the details and a big difference on the previous...you should actually stick up both side by side for comparison. Even expression-wise there are improvements.

Haha How long do you think his head was sitting there blinking, confused, watching his comrades run up the stairs?

Dude! This looks fantastic, such a huge improvement over the previous iteration. The work you've done on the figures expression and acting has made all the difference. Great job man.

Thanks man! I got a lot more reference, I kind of hate admitting that, but it really makes sense. I don't understand all these artists that say they paint without it. It's my fault for thinking I didn't need it either... heh

I think some of that culture has grown around the concept art crowd who are mean't to churn the stuff out so fast there isn't always time for reference. It is strange though how that attitude that using reference means you're cheating has seeped into the illustration side of things. If working from reference is good enough for Howard Pyle it's good enough for me. ha. I'm looking forward to seeing your next piece dude.

Right, these guys have probably built up a language to draw from by using reference until they didn't need it anymore. Developing as an artist so much of it falls on you, that your kind of on your own on how to interpret advice - its kind of like how kids pick up bad words I guess. Anyways, I'll be using reference from now on. Thanks!
