Description have you ever wondered what antlions do when they grow up and get fed up with digging in the sand?
they stretch a bit and grow wings
i discovered this example on the outside wall of our house, and needed a ladder to shoot it
overall size is about 40mm

top: shot with reversed lens macro setup
bottom: 50mm lens + kenko tubes
both with my macro flash tube

Why do you get all the cool bugs at your place? I knew what they looked like when they grow up, but I've never actually seen one, and even the antlion itself only once.. Great captures, I love the detail and also the black-and-white background. Your recent shots rock!

hehe, yesterday i saw another robberfly on our wooden garage door (i didn't shoot it this time though)
and one day after i told a friend about the antlion, he discovered one in his garden too
i guess it's because we are close to the vienna woods, and perchtoldsdorf is quite green
and he told me about a place in the woods (at the josefswarte) where lots of young ones have their sand craters, i plan to bike up there and shoot them

Yeah, I guess Perchtoldsdorf isn't a bad place...
I saw their sand craters on Eichkogel last year, didn't search this year though, because I was concentrating on finding mantids.

any luck with the mantids? i think they're rather rare, although they exist on our heath i've never seen one

With finding, yes. with getting the perfect shot I wanted, no. I need more practice with the close-up filter...and more luck too.
They are supposed to be rare, yes. But I've seen at least one every year at my place for the last couple of years, and chances are high that you find some on Trockenrasen. Took us a while before we saw the first one, but then we had at least five, if not more - and we didn't even spend a lot of time on this particular meadow because we were sunburnt already.

This entire series has been stunning, the sharpness of these shots is greateer than most of my 50mm pictures. Keep it up, I'm enjoying them immensly.

holy moly! Look at the detail in the antennae!! You're a genius man, one day I gotta build myself that little reverse lens macro thingy.

you should indeed you even got the same lens i use on it (17-40mm f/4)

btw, which one is the 200mm lens you use?

kristoff In reply to graemo [2004-08-10 15:42:50 +0000 UTC]

I got a Canon 70-200mm F/4 but I'm going to sell it and replace it with either a Canon 135mm F/2 or 300mm F/4. I like primes a lot more than zooms.

graemo In reply to kristoff [2004-08-10 17:51:51 +0000 UTC]

ahh, i recently went out of my mind and got the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS
normally, i'm more into primes also, but i'll use this range only outdoors, where a subject's distance can change quite fast, and i hate having to switch lenses all the time somewhere in the dirt, when the animal you want to capture will be gone when you are finished
and it's really sharp, even wide open, not like the 135mm f/2 of course but it's one of the sharpest zooms around

for studio work i mainly use the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 primes, but this zoom is a practical compromise for a different task

kristoff In reply to graemo [2004-08-10 21:33:27 +0000 UTC]

Sweet, that's a nice lens, a bit out of my price range but really nice. Ever since I've used it I've been obsessed with IS and that's why I want a 300mm F/4 IS. I'm pretty stuck on which to get first, the 135 or the 300 as I shoot both sports and people.

graemo In reply to kristoff [2004-08-10 21:47:23 +0000 UTC]

mhmm, i think 135mm x1.6 is a bit long for people shots, i'd rather get the 100mm f/2.8 macro for this task
the 300 f/4 IS is surely a niiice one (and not that expensive), seems to be a dream with the 1.4 teleconverter too

... dreams away

kristoff In reply to graemo [2004-08-10 22:23:54 +0000 UTC]

The 135 would also double up as a lowlight sports lens though cause everything in this damn city has to be at night! It is pretty long though, eventually I'll end up getting an 85 1.8 down the road but that's far in the future, I'm working on getting an Apple Powerbook right now
