Description i've had this idea since i got this beetle...
i wanted to use a soft fill flash from the right, but my flash system (ahaha) bitched around once again...

so this is just natural light with a reflector, and stronger shadows than intended...

wicked photo, how did you know you could do this with a dead beetle (or presumably other insects)?

do you collect insects or was this just a special case?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to SerendipityByDesign [2007-03-03 09:07:34 +0000 UTC]

i just noticed that from their shape the joints should hold together just by the chitin structure, so i tried to move them and i could
i don't collect bugs as such, i just use what i find dead somewhere or get given by friends (like in this case)

What a great shot! Did you try to set this one up, or just kinda let the beetle loose on the chessboard and hope for good results? He's a gorgeous color, it really grabs attention.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to UmbrellaJane [2004-12-04 12:55:41 +0000 UTC]

i set it up, the bug is dead
when you are really careful, you can break the dried up muscle(?) inside and then move most of the joints

I love those beetles. They make me smile.

The blue colour of the shell looks very nice against the wood of the board.

have you ever seen them flying?
they keep their bodies vertical, with the antlers in the air
they have become very rare here though ...

Is it a rhinocerous beetle? I love the metallic blue and I also am very fond of the idea, but I think maybe it would have been better to capture it from a lower angle.. that would possibly knock out some of the shadows there and make the bug a little clearer. Nevertheless he is a lovely little guy/girl... Can you tell?

Aaaa! This is incredible! I love the idea, and the technicalities of how this shot looks also I would've liked to see a shot from slightly lower down also, so you can see more chess peices in the distance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to fyta [2004-02-08 12:55:46 +0000 UTC]

other people wanted me to crop the background pieces out
they were intended to be an anonymous crowd, watching from a save distance... but maybe they would have been anonymous enough just from the dof, but then i would have needed a background behind the pieces and i'm uhh, not good with backgrounds...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fyta In reply to graemo [2004-02-08 13:43:38 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, that's interesting. Maybe the other peices could be more like spectators, in which case if there was more of them it might be more obvious

Dan-YELL [2004-01-06 20:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Is that really a beetle? It's a pretty cool idea. Though, I'd be interested in seeing it from different angels. Or maybe crop out those bottom parts of the other pieces. The are kind of distracting from the rest of the composition. We can already assume that there are other chess pieces on the board, we don't need to neccesarily see any of them, and if we are to, I'd rather see the whole piece than just the bottom.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to Dan-YELL [2004-01-06 23:09:16 +0000 UTC]

it's really a real beetle, but a dead one...
when they dry up inside, all the chitin joints are still functionable, so you can set them up in any pose, if you do it carefully
mhmm... interesting point about the background pieces... i wanted to create a sort of anonymous crowd, watching the scene from a distance, just the way a crowd does, when an accident or a crime happens... i don't know if not showing their heads makes chess figures more anonymous but it was a try...
maybe the lens blur wasn't enough to neutralize them, cause you're not the first to comment on that...
