Description Another etching from '04

Here I really went crazy using my fingerprints to help etch in the dark textures around the plate to form the hill the tree stands on and the strange sky without it seeming too thought out. Then i just went ocd on the tree. i really love sketching them out with their twisting gnarled branches winding and twisting their way up.

Again I used standard black printers ink with brunt umber oil paint mixed in for the pigment

This is a gorgeous print! Good job, the effect of the fingerprints is very impressive. The tree is greatly textured and the negative space going on in the branches really give some interesting shapes Also, the lines around the edges really contain the piece and really complete it, they might be my favorite part!

Awesome!

Wonderful texture, I really love the idea of using your fingerprints.
I've been working with some printing lately, and I honestly never thought of that. It's creates a really interesting look.

Love the texture form the fingerprints - beautiful! The grey from the plate tone (I assume? or aquatint) makes the whole thing work well together too. So many details....

Beautiful!

The gray is just from the plate. I didn't do a complete rub down of the plate after inking it. I mostly just concentrated on highlights and other light areas in the work letting a lot of ink remain on the plate in the darker areas (especially the areas etched with my finger prints).

I'm glad you like it though!

Oh no. I'm still in the art/illustration game, it's just changed focus for me. Since I've moved to New Orleans, I'm pretty much limited to what i can produce in a small apartment room. That means etching is most definitely out of the picture.

It's boiled down to watercolor and digital works much nay more.

HopeTithe In reply to graver13 [2008-12-03 21:50:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I can see how that would be complicated. New Orleans must be beautiful. Ive always wanted to visit that place. ^^
When I did my art in my bedroom it would drive me crazy. For you actually want to walk away from your work, not just movie half a foot away from it and go to sleep. You know its there and the temptation to work on it is hard

excellent

Thank you. The only thing you lose by not experimenting on a piece is time... and time not lost on a piece will just end up getting lost in a bottle somewhere (at least with me). Might as well make that time count for something

really nice how you used your finger prints...but i don't completely understand how you did it...did you press your finger into the warm and liquid etching ground, or did you use softground/vernis mou? i like this texture a lot!

Emily-Lemesurier [2007-12-05 00:06:26 +0000 UTC]

That is really nicely done. How did you achieve those fingerprints? Did you just use the oil from your fingers to prevent the acid biting? Does that work?

graver13 In reply to Emily-Lemesurier [2007-12-06 00:13:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! As for the finger prints, I might be oily, but I'm not that oily .

I was using a liquid acrylic to coat the plate instead of the more toxic asphaltum. I, for the life of me, can not remember what it was called now... we just called it "the red stuff" mostly due to it's coloration. Either way, after i coated the plate in the red stuff, I just made all kinds of finger prints in it before I heat set it. I never used asphaltum so I'm not sure if you have to heat set it to get it to dry, but you did with the red stuff.

The tree truly does look like a creature in itself. Almost like a muscle map of intensely textured beauty. The finger printing is a very creative way to shade. Tons of props there mate. You've got my favorite.
