the source images were cut out of old highlights magazines from the early 60 then scanned in. Everything you see was manipulated in photoshop.

The older individual kind of appears to be doing some kind of kong fu stance. Mental illness is nothing worse than having pneumonia, oh man, that's crazy, did that come from a publication?

the text and illustration of the people came from old issues of highlights magazine from 1961

He MAY come home cured...or with a psychiatric extreme makeover...a brand new lobotomy. Great as usual...in fact, this one is extra great.

you are just saying its extra great cuz i used a piece of yer stock
i think it's funny that these kids used such proper english back in 1961

No I think it's extra great coz I find the topic of mental illness particularly interesting. I have a close relative who I've spent many hours visiting in psychiatric hospitals over the years...it's very insightful (& sad). I think only a mentally ill person would call their kid Eldon.

you know.. you touched on a concern the bounced around my brain for a bit while working on this image.
i just thought the language and verbage of the text was funny... but i worried that maybe i would offend someone who had psycholigical problems, or had relatives with similar problems.
in the end my impish side won the battle.

My mum's been sick for years & I think a sense of humour's the only thing that keeps you sane in the end. She hasn't lost her biting wit, & there's even laughs to be had in the bleak setting of a mental hospital. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you...it didn't offend me...I think those educational guides are really funny & quaint & you weren't saying anything insensitive or bigoted or anything.
Long live the imp!

you hit the nail on the head about a sense of humour keeping one sane. out ability to laugh at ourselves and enjoy the absurd is one of lifes great pleasures. the world would be very bleak if i couldnt laugh and not take it so seriously.

Nice work...it's weird in a good sense. Like the oddness of the comic, Red Meat.
Very good balance. I like the vertical feel of this. Very proper.

i like the fun weird... putting things in different contexts than what they were originally created.

haha! quite odd, i must say.
magically delicious though..you come up with the most wonderful concepts.
i'm really liking this kind of americana/50's theme you've been with for a while now.
this was put together beautifully.
grade a aslyummy goodness.
and even though it's already been asked..what book was that originally from or did you write it yourself?

thanks.
i love re-contextualizing (is that a real word? if not it should be) these images and words.
glad you are appreciating this style-- im having quite a bit of fun with it. It's quite enjoyable hunting down the images and things to use... thank gosh for local fleat-tiques and antique malls.
to answer your question about what book it came from: the words and the picture of the two boys both come from an issue of highlights magazine from 1961. I did use both of these outside of their original context.

i'm assuming that the nut - i mean the mentally challenged individual - on the chair playing with coins is indeed toby's dad. if not, than bob and/or eldon may want to get fitted for white jackets as well. and what's the boy looking at anyway? the magic zipper trick? oh my.
super words, colors and darren stevensy type of imagery! no death threats needed! hooray!

gregoriousone In reply to fredfree [2004-11-15 06:29:15 +0000 UTC]
unfortunately your assumption is incorrect. that's bob and eldon. that's toby's dad on the left.
as for bob.. well he has a bit of a staring problem that sometimes makes eldon think he might have certain 'special' feelings.

fredfree In reply to gregoriousone [2004-11-15 21:24:34 +0000 UTC]
i stand corrected, but i still think eldon and bob are a little more than special themselves. i'd keep an eye out if i were you.
