Wonderful composition and great use of both text and texture. How large is this image when you print it?

I love your work, but I just don't understand how your process works. It's so complicated and amazing. Mind explaining how you go about creating such a piece?

my process eh? not sure i could explain it clearly. It involves the manipulation of many layers and some creative use of brushes on the burn/and dodge tool. I a collection of old magazines, photos. I even have current photos from my Canon Digital Rebel (have to plug the camera).
my process involves taking bits and pieces out of random images and assembling them digitally in a new way. adding a new context within which to see and use them. There are artists that assemble things from found items. In essence that is what i do. Photoshop, my scanner, and my wacom tablet are my tools, materials, and glue.
I hope that sort of answers your question...

always glad to help inspire someone. so many have inspired me on this site.
i decided to go a little 'old school' with the way i put the words around the image-- there could have been much slicker digital ways to do it, but i think the 'handmade' look (albeit done digitally) fits the feel of the image.

thanks fredfree! I never really thought of doing a series... w.h. auden's poem is quite long. Ill have to read through the rest of it and see if I find any inspiration.

nice, the texture's so crisp and definite here compared with your more recent work and i'm liking the way you've worked the text in here to tell an oblique story. but let me tell you about miss edith gee...

gregoriousone In reply to schlockhausen [2005-08-29 21:47:56 +0000 UTC]
the reason for the crispness is my new glad fresh seal containers. (a good way to keep your seals fresh)
oy.
anyhow.. i did very little layering in this piece-- its composed from only 3 sources most of the brushwork was using the burn tool and the spone tool for some selected saturation.
When I first started adding in the type I had something different in mind (as is usually the case) I wanted to use the type on the bottom part to draw the eye down there.. most of that area was too dark for it to work. Im glad it ended up this way I think it adds to the composition.
(im sure you could tell some very interesting stories about miss edith gee! )

thanks! the pictures i used just lent themselve to that composition. for the type I wanted to do something that looked more (for want of a better word) old school, no fancy effects or anything-- i wanted it to look like someone hand pasted it that way.

thanks muchly. I spend a lot of time doing small tweaks with colour and enhancing certain areas, and desaturaing others... colour is such a wonderful thing to play with.. it affects the entire mood and feel of the piece.
