Born to the daughter of the great matriarch Athena, her mother Aminifu was 14 when she gave birth to her first daughter her little Tembo. At birth she weighed about 260 pounds and approximately two feet nine inches at the shoulder. Her brain weighed 35 percent of what it would weigh as a full grown breeding female. She had a lot of mental and physical development ahead of her.
Tembo spent the first four years of her life in very close proximity to her mother and other family member's. She depended on her mother for both milk and care. When she was around four years of old, her younger bother Jelani was born and she was weaned off her mothers milk. Like many young females her age she showed great interest in her new little bother and lavished him with attention. At the same time she was developing her own relationships within the family and learning elephant protocol. As a calf she would have been tolerated in most situations, but as she got older she had learn about dominance and aggression as well as affiliation. She would also have begun to know elephants from other families and learn her own family's social position in relation to them.
The years from 4 to 11 were probably by elephant standards carefree. Tembo was growing, learning, playing, and developing friendships and bonds. In her many years there were many bright green sunny days when Tembo and the other youngsters in her family and bond group were able to be silly. Racing about, charging through bushes and tall grasses, heads held high, ears fanned and eyes open wide glinting with mischief, and running across the open plains in the floppy run letting forth wild, pulsating play trumpets. On the best days the every one would join in even the dignified adult females.
Starting sometime in her in her ninth or tenth year Tembo's body began to through changes and in her eleventh or twelfth year, if conditions were adequate and there was not a major drought , she probably came into estrus for the first time a major milestone in her development and experienced all the confusion, fear, and excitement of that event. She may or may not have conceived on that occasion. If she did not entire estrus a few months later she most likely conceived then. Her body went through further changes as the calf in her womb grew and various hormones went into action. Her breasts filled out gradually over her 22 month long pregnancy. By the time she 18 months pregnant her side's were bulging and the weight of the fetus slowed her down. She had to feed more then ever before, because she, as well as the calf growing inside her. At her age she was only about two third's the size of a full grown female.
At age 14 she gave birth to her very first calf a daughter Tombi Like many first time mothers she did not give birth in synchrony with the other females in her herd and she also gave birth outside of the main calving season. Unlike many first time mothers who lose their first calf Tembo's daughter Tombi was luckily born in a year in which the rains were generous to the savannah and in a close knit family.
Since Tombi lived out her early years. Tembo came into estrus for the second time when her first calf was a 2 years old nd given her two year pregnancy she was 18 when she gave birth to her second calf a son Zito. Over the next 18 years Tembo was either lactating, pregnant, or both as she would continue to suckle her youngest calf until the next one was born. Since she had given birth to Tombi when she was 14, and had Zito when she was 18 she had calves every four years her youngest daughter is 2 years old and like many females she is to give birth 22 months later. Important social changes were also occurring. Whoever was the matriarch when she was born which was her grandmother passed away to be with with the three matriarchs of the Kilio Valley. After her grandmother Athena's passing her mother took on the mantle of matriarch but when her mother died at age 50 due to an illness Tembo herself became matriarch. On the day that her aunt died her name was longer Tembo but Ma Tembo the herds keeper of memory.
So I decided to edit Ma Tembo design. Instead of having a broken tusk I gave Ma Tembo one tusk instead which is a natural trait that happens in African and Forest Elephants, and male Asian Elephants I also changed her eye color to a more natural eye color I also removed the hairs and markings on the top of her head. And added nicks and tears in her ears.
