Beloved, would make a great title for this!

Ah, I like the idea of that.  Though I do think there's something sad, something perhaps less than Beloved, that is stated in the fact that she is not named, even on her own tombstone.  Simply wife of the Moon.....

She is named. Her name is on the top of the marker.

You are so right!  I totally missed that, focusing only on the front.  Interesting placement.  Thanks for pointing it out.

It is an unusual placement.

In a way, your image conveys a sense of eternity. Beautiful shot.

Thank you very much! I am glad to hear that came across. I am still wishing I had a better title for this one, but it seems it is conveying what I was hoping anyway.

Maybe something about cycles? Anyway ... the name "Moon" was meaningful to me. You're welcome!

Yes, I like that idea - great tie in.  The name was certainly a great and lucky find.  Will keep thinking on it.  Thanks again for the great feedback, as always.  Much appreciated.

Thanks so much! I loved all the little connections here. I am still not quite happy with the title I came up with, but so glad to hear that the details came across without overt reference. Thanks again for your comments and for the fav!

Yeah, titles can give me some bother too.  You're welcome

Glad it's not just me!  I want them to bring everything together, but not spell it out in such a way as to render mundane.  I know there are schools of thought that say that a work should speak for itself, so titles don't really matter, but I feel like when one is right it can add so much to a piece.  Just a guide to the viewer or reader, or a suggestion of another way of looking at something.  Because it's all subject to interpretation, so we might as well at least provide a hint at our own bias in creating.

True.  I tend to waver on that point though.  Sometimes I want to be obvious about my bias in creating, other times I want to retain some mystery.

Yes, I can definitely see the merits of both, though I probably tend to lean towards the mysterious in most of my work.  To me it depends on the particular work in question, and I suppose the artist's intention in communicating with the work.  I can see where a lot of your work would lend itself to a more obvious title.

Maybe, although I can often get others coming along assuming my work implies something that had not even crossed my mind.  They sort of go digging, or make comments where you are like 'why did they say that?', then you realize what assumptions they must have made, and that can be a bit annoying, particularly if they are not kind assumptions.

Hmm, yes, I suppose I can understand that as well.  Especially if the assumptions are not coming from a place of kindness, but rather perhaps negativity based on the viewer's own biases.  The aspect of mystery that I do like is when it can draw a viewer into the universal while also allowing him or her to reflect on personal experience and perhaps expand meaning rather than constrict it.  I usually enjoy the perspectives others bring to my work, even when not exactly intentioned, but this usually causes me to realize how I was reflecting my own limitations, if that makes any sense.

Yes, it is good for people to see what they see in a piece, as long as they keep that personal to them and I guess don't try to project that on to the artist.  Their perspectives, that is cool, and yeah, I agree, that can be interesting.  Not really sure what you mean by reflecting your own limitations.  Are you saying that if you thought you were saying one thing, then someone else came along and pronounced it to be something different, you might second guess your own mind?

greystarlight In reply to jojo22 [2016-02-11 21:51:17 +0000 UTC]

No, I meant kind of the opposite actually.  Not second guessing my intention, but realizing that my original intent was limited by the perspective of my own personal experience, and can actually be looked at from a much broader perspective.  Sometimes I might make art from a very personal space, but then realize because of the reactions of others that it has a more universal application.  Just a slightly different take on the interpretive aspect of viewership.  Am I making myself any clearer?

Ah yes, you are.  And I agree, I do think it is interesting to hear their take on the art as it personally reads to them.
