Description
Did you know dragons can swim? Of course they can! This is an ancient monstrosity walking ashore after unnamed business in the deep. Everything living nearby is trying to get out of its way as quickly as possible ...I really, really recommend the full size view for this. There are a *lot* of details.
The dragon is known as "Ebb" and is a character I use in roleplaying on UV www.unicornsvisions.com/phpBB2β¦ (it's a nice place for roleplaying any character you want. Pray you don't come across Ebb on a bad day though
This was done fully in the free graphical program GIMP (www.gimp.org/ ), only work outside the program was creating a very simple 3D-model of the dragon in the free modeller gsculpt (gsculpt.sourceforge.net/ ) so I could quickly try out some poses. The model was only used as a very basic reference though, all colour, textures and so on were done in GIMP 2.3.15.
The image is overall an experiment in water, light and reflections. Total work some 14 hours in total I reckon, so if you like it I would appreciate a fav.
Comments -- and most especially critique -- is highly appreciated!
EDIT: Thanks to comments in the thread and elsewhere, I have made some considerable changes to the image, changing the water considerably, as well as hopefully merging the boat better contrast-wise. Also the jaw and right wing should not blend together as much now. One thing I didn't change was the rower. He's now officially just grabbing the oars from the first guy who dropped them in shock, trying to grab hold of them and stop them from getting away ... it's just not practical to start redesigning the whole boat in order to turn the rower around, so this is how it has to be.
Anyway, let me know what you think.

I love the way you shaded the dragon... and the water comes out very well, too!

That's amazing! The dragon is huge! I love how big it is. It is enjoyable to look at the humans first and then at the dragon!
Great job!

Absolutely stunning. It gives the impression of an over-baring presence that befits a creature of Ebb's enormous stature.
Beautifully unnerving.
Although I didn't have the same problem distinguishing between Ebb's lower jaw and his right wing, I do see what some of the other viewers mean. Perhaps it just needs an enhanced perspective of depth and distance. Considering the atrocious weather, perhaps wash out the entire image just a touch. It wouldn't need much at all, it's still astonishingly splendid as-is.

Hopefully this effect should be diminished now, since the other viewers were commenting on the first version of this image, which did have trouble with the blending of the jaw. I have also washed out the image considerably compared to the first iterations, and people are rather complaining about the dragon being too faded rather than it being too sharp as it is; so I don't dare do any more of that.
Thanks for the comment and the fav. Greatly appreciated.

That's fair enough. PayPal has caused my some problems before, and is quit awkward for someone who's new to it.
I would (hands up) be very interested in buying a print in excess of 10x15" of this piece of work though. Perhaps a 36x24 print would be an ideal size...it's very deserving of a large format.

Well, I find that you don't actually need Paypal until there's enough revenue to warrant withdrawing anything (can take a while I reckon).
So due to popular demand I've added this and a few other of my images as prints now, as an experiment.

It just seems to me something as grand as this painting portrays is really suited best with a little surrealism.

More surrealistic, but also less realistic in my view. It's a fair opinion though; it has indeed changed from the original one.

This is fabulous.
I love the water flowing off of his skin, and especially the water coming out of his mouth from between those teeth of his.
You also did a good job with the spray on the waves. Little things like that always impress me because it would be really easy to go overboard with them and see more spray than wave.
All in all, you've done an amazing job. This is definitely a piece to be proud of.

As someone else said, at first glance I thought he had a huge open mouth. As you've said, I think a little more contrast in places should help
This is really wonderful! Looks highly original to me. The way you've drawn the dragon and the water coming off him is amazing. There really is a feeling of awe at this gigantic beast emerging.
I'm not totally sure the composition works as well as it could. To me, the tiny corner of beach just looks a bit fussy somehow, and there's something I don't quite like about the boat - I'm not at all sure what! Could be the hue or the contrast or the positioning (perhaps it's a little too close to the bottom of the image?) I think I'll have a play with it myself for the sake of my own learning at least.
Fantastic work - I'm really glad I saw it

You have some good points here. The jaw of the dragon must, as you say, be changed a bit. I know that there is something off with the boat. It simply stands out a little too much I think, but I'm currenlty at a loss as to what should be changed about it (except turning the rower around, lol). It could simply be a symptom of breaking the rule of thirds somewhat in this image. We'll see when I'll have time to update it. Thanks for your comments!
Glad to hear the massive size of the dragon comes across, and thanks for the kind words!

Welcome
Did you read my further comments? I'm not sure what happens when I reply to myself (oops )
I found that simply selecting around the boat and people and turning the contrast down a little helps it gel with the image better. Sorry, not sure if you disagree or you didn't see my comment because I didn't make a new one.
Having studied this very closely now, I'm absolutely amazed at your work on the scales.
