Description Did you know dragons can swim? Of course they can! This is an ancient monstrosity walking ashore after unnamed business in the deep. Everything living nearby is trying to get out of its way as quickly as possible ...

I really, really recommend the full size view for this. There are a *lot* of details.

The dragon is known as "Ebb" and is a character I use in roleplaying on UV www.unicornsvisions.com/phpBB2… (it's a nice place for roleplaying any character you want. Pray you don't come across Ebb on a bad day though ). The design of the dragon is all mine, Β©Griatch and all that.

This was done fully in the free graphical program GIMP (www.gimp.org/ ), only work outside the program was creating a very simple 3D-model of the dragon in the free modeller gsculpt (gsculpt.sourceforge.net/ ) so I could quickly try out some poses. The model was only used as a very basic reference though, all colour, textures and so on were done in GIMP 2.3.15.

The image is overall an experiment in water, light and reflections. Total work some 14 hours in total I reckon, so if you like it I would appreciate a fav.

Comments -- and most especially critique -- is highly appreciated!

EDIT: Thanks to comments in the thread and elsewhere, I have made some considerable changes to the image, changing the water considerably, as well as hopefully merging the boat better contrast-wise. Also the jaw and right wing should not blend together as much now. One thing I didn't change was the rower. He's now officially just grabbing the oars from the first guy who dropped them in shock, trying to grab hold of them and stop them from getting away ... it's just not practical to start redesigning the whole boat in order to turn the rower around, so this is how it has to be.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Good! Realy good! )

Well as said below water could be shiner... and darker i think - this looks like sea, and actually i never seemed such bright sea!

But composition very cool!

Always good with feedback! This is a bright day, the contrasts are overall low in this image in order to enhance the feeling of distance and size. So the sea is a tad bright, this is true. Won't change anything in this old image at this point, but feedback is always useful, thankyou!

I think this is what I'll be trying to copy. It's a single subject, with basic lighting, and plenty of room for making errors.

The sketching should go okay, it's the painting that always ruins me.

Let me know if you want to be updated as I go.

Using 3D models only as a base for posing?
I hadn't even thought of that yet...
Glad to see another thegimp user around these parts.
this one is epic, to say the least.
The image just splashes out at you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to zanroth [2007-11-21 18:08:42 +0000 UTC]

A 3D model is useful in order to be able to quickly try out complex perspective, especially when there are so many limbs and wings and things as here. But once I found a good pose, the model was only used a total of five minutes in the actual drawing process -- just to get the rouch sketch down. Not relying on it means the model can be very simple -- all you need is essentially the get a feel for what blocks what from view.

... If you're interested in doing artwork in GIMP, I can recommend the forum GIMPtalk [link] . I'm a moderator there, and there are a lot of tutorials and hints for using GIMP for all sorts of things. It's never bad to see how others do things.

Impressive drawing, the water effect really came out and really looks nice! Also the use of the subtile colors is very kewl!

I woiuldn't use this as a wallpaper, but I can imagine some sure will!! This is nice, keep on going..

Oh, one question, how did you make this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to alex3305 [2007-11-20 17:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The drawing was done from scratch in the free graphics program GIMP. It's mostly a matter of hard brushwork.

He looks unbelieveble! The design is great! It's not someting you see everywhere. I love your eye for detail, the scales are great and the water falling of him looks really realistic. What i like most of all is the head! It just has something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to Ruth-Tay [2007-11-12 13:33:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Glad you like it. Ol' Ebb is a character I once developed as a "realistic" dragon (although smaller in size then), forming the basis of an encyclopaedia dracologica. He's great fun to roleplay too, although not very nice with a very strange psychology. This scene is actually a scene from roleplay.

Hello

Hey, about Print, you have used the profile CMYK? How much DPI? And About size of image to print?

The size of the print version is 3560x2480 pixels at 300 DPI. GIMP does not support CMYK currently, but the colours of the print matches the digital version perfectly anyway -- I myself have a 46x61 cm framed print of this particular image at home, and it looks just fine.

Thanks for the comment.
