Description
A quick design for the speculative evolution group, a raccoon that has evolved over the millennia into a bipedal predator. I sorta rushed this one just to get it on the screen, but I had fun and started learning some tricks for painting fur.Related content

Did you know that every month a dead homeless person is found in Los Angeles county that has been attacked, killed and eaten by a group of "cute" raccoons?
Dangerous little buggars.

I'd have expected its markings to change faster than its limbs. But without those markings it wouldn't look like a raccoon, I guess, and the point of the picture would be lost.
Yeah this is super cool.

Thanks for the comment- this one was as much about personal therapy as speculative evolution (my family and I have had to share out backyard with 2 successive families of ornery raccoons).

It's sort of an evolution of the imagination, then?

Not sure where the idea came from, although I did get chased out of my backyard by a mother raccoon right around then- maybe that had something to do with it.

Well, I mainly used a spatter brush in photoshop, set to around 20% opacity. I built up a lot of overlapping short strokes, following the direction I wanted the fur to go and switching between lots of different shades- there are some browns, reds and yellows in addition to the grays.
After that, I masked the whole fur area and created a new layer over it and set it to "multiply". I roughed in the shadows with a rough pastel brush set at around 6% opacity, again building up the values slowly. Then I created another layer, set it to "screen" and built up lighter colors for the highlights.
As a last step, I created one more layer and used my smallest brush and added in individual hairs here and there, both light and dark.
If you're not using Photoshop some of these settings may go by different names, but most paint programs offer all these functions in one form or another.
Hope that helps!

Troy: Cool, although if racoons were to evolve in the future, They'd likely be a result of convergant evolution of bears and/or dogs.

Really nice future raccoon design I've got a similar future creature called the Raptog, which is a bipedal decendant of the Coyote
