Description
The sun was setting over an orange creme Equestria. Soleil was getting the last of her studies sitting on a comfy couch on the midnight balcony. She stretched out, taking in the view. She was startled, she didn't realize how long she had been sitting and reading- she'd been there since noon. She had been reading up on the history of incomplete spells from the library. They normally weren't from Starswirl as most all of his spells were a success, but she enjoyed reading up on the lesser known spells and restudying them. Being a spellmaker was similar to being a scientist. She was just about to get up when hoofsteps behind her drew her attention. It was her cousin, Solace. He stopped when he noticed her, and back up."Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt your reading..." His ears lowered as his soft voice got quieter. He started to back away.
"No no, not at all. You weren't bothering me." She stretched again, " I was actually just about to leave- I didn't realize how late it was." She laughed. Solace smiled. "Oh... I see." He felt awkward- not knowing what else to say. The two of them don't interact all that often- between the training and the modeling gig, the two were normally very busy at work and barely had the chance to have a coffee together. They'd never really gotten a chance to know one another, and never quite knew how to introduce themselves to each other. Solace was never around Soleil when they were foals, Luna had found him when he was just out of infancy, and by then Soleil was already doing stage business. Never any playdates or get togethers- mainly because of Solace's trauma problems; they made him shy and antisocial.
Soleil thought it would be a good time to ask him some things, there wasn't a big crowd around, and he didn't seem very anxious.
"So..." She started, "What are you doing out here?" She smiled, closing her book.
"Oh, I was just... Uh I fly with the stars at night and make sure they're in the right placement- wouldn't want to uh... confuse any travels looking for the North Star to find it's fallen South..." He laughed nervously.
"Oh really? You're in charge of star formations?" She seemed genuinely intrigued by the subject.
Solace nodded, "Yeah... I really like it... Calms my mind a lot." He smiled, still awkward- ears still back.
"I love night time too. The star patterns are always so beautiful." She looked at the setting sun and up to the darkening sky- stars had started to peak in against the dulling light. "You know, a lot of the mages that made spells based their mathematics on star patterns? There's a unit of magical measurement based on the vector of a constellation- Libra- to be precise." She babbled, her heart burned with passion- she couldn't help herself. She was excited to know someone else might be interested in something she's studied.
"Really? I... Didn't know that..." He laughed. "That's really cool, actually." He counted with his hoof, trying to figure out what to say next. He finally revved up the courage enough to ask, "Soleil... Can I ask you something personal?"
Soleil turned to look at Solace, a little confused. She smiled, "Sure."
"Uhm... If you don't mind me asking... Why aren't you in a Magic University?" He counted again, "I mean, you seem really passionate about magic and such... So why do you model instead?"
"Oh..." Soleil looked to the ground, she didn't expect this sort of question. "You know... I really like modeling..." She lied. She hated it. With a passion. "I just want to make my mother and father proud... I know that sounds silly, and Princess Twilight is always the one who says you should follow your dreams, but it's really different to be the child of a royal family... You have a reputation to uphold..." She looked down again, she regretted ranting so much. "Sorry..." She trailed off.
"I understand." Solace said, without hesitation.
"Huh?" Soleil looked back up.
"I understand what you mean... I mean... It was hard, having to face the masses- being the front headlines of Equestria Daily since I was adopted. I mean, you know how I am- shy, quiet, not the most social... It was hard to go outside of the castle, let alone make friends... I was expected to be so perfect. I was expected to be like Mother. But I'm not... She knows that, and she doesn't force me, but there's still so much expectation from everypony else... It's hard sometimes." He looked down, but after a minute, he looked back to Soleil, who was teary eyed. "Oh... I'm so sorry I've made you upset." His face twisted into worry.
"No, no, I'm fine Solace..." She wiped a tear from her cheek, "I just... I never knew anyone could understand... I thought I was just being spoiled, or overdramatic..." She sniffled. "Thank you, Solace..." She put a hand to his shoulder. He flinched at first, but allowed it. He nodded, avoiding eye contact.
"No problem." He smiled. "I've got to get out there before the sun sets completely."
"Of course, excuse me." Soleil said, giving him space- he relaxed as she distanced herself. He took a step to the edge of the balcony and released his hair. He widened his wings and let the breeze catch his long mane and flight feathers. Soleil was watching, smiling.
"Soleil?" He turned back to her before he went. She acknowledged him with a "Hmm?".
"You should take to them. Your parents. It took me a long time to talk to Mother, but... It was extremely rewarding, and I boundaries now. A pony I can trust, and a place I can breath and be secure. So you should talk to them about your problem and your fears. Don't be afraid to let them in. I know they're already proud of you, and they love you. I'm sure they'd want to support you in any venture you make." Solace gave a big smile, and Soleil's eyes teared up again. She smiled back and nodded. "I'll try..." She sniffled. "Thanks."
Solace nodded. He jumped from the ledge and let the wing catch him. His hair flew into a long string of silver that shined in the brightening light of the moon- making him look like a falling star. Soleil stood and watched in awe as the echoes of her studies took her mind into ease. Let them in.

Finally, I cousin-to-cousin interaction. I wanted to write something with Solace, and also I wanted to draw Soleil again, so here we go. An interaction and expansion on some of the personal issues they both have. Enjoy!
