Yes, a simple printing error means the copyright holders lose complete control of their IP.
Besides, that wasn't a gap. It seems the only reason you want to ignore the toys is out of spite. That's a bit childish if you ask me.

Coming from the guy who can't make a comparison because he doesn't like one side of it, I'm not too insulted.
You may think of it as a printing error, but based on their record of making inaccurate toys, it's just one more gigantic step away from respectfulness.

What? You talking about Sonic? It's not that I don't like Sonic, I've never played Sonic, I'm just basing my opinion on what Yahtzee said. Also, why would you be insulted? I was just trying to make a point.
So what exactly do you mean by "inaccurate toys"? They're dolls. They are not supposed to be anatomically correct.
Of course there are inconsistencies between the toys and the show, Celestia not pink on the show, but the toy line begs to differ.
My point is, when confronted with these conflicts, we should agree with the show. But ONLY when confronted with these conflicts. Which is a point you seem to be ignoring, and it's getting really irritating, having to repeat the same thing over and over. So how's this, it's much more detailed:
- Letβs rank canon regarding a fictional story. First, would be the primary source, for instance, the Doctor Who television series, the Star Wars movies, et cetera. Followed by the supplemental materials that have gone through the copyright holder, like Doctor Who novels and audio dramas, and Star Wars novels and the fucking Christmas Special! This is also known as βExtended Universe.β Last and most certainly least, shit the fans made up to fill in the gaps!
So, for instance, if a Doctor Who novel talks about the Time War, and said someone named Faccinon was the President of Gallifrey during that time, that would be acceptable as canon. Until The End of Time airs, which established that Rassilon was President of Gallifrey. So the official source trumps the secondary source. But if earlier, the fans decided that Romana was President of Gallifrey during the Time War, even with consensus, when that book is released (that establishes Faccinon as President), they would have to be out of their minds to say, βwell it hasnβt been established in the TV show yet, so weβll stick with Romana!β But for some reason, with regards to My Little Pony, this is exactly what has happened. The toys went through Hasbro, just like every episode of the show, which means they qualify as a secondary source, or βExtended Universe.β Their word is much more official than yours.
But even if that argument made any sense, it falls apart when you realize that if they are ever to name the green pony in the show, it most certainly wonβt be Lyra. Her name will be Heartstrings, because itβs likely Hasbro wants a certain level of consistency between the show and the toys. Remember, in this case, the toy company runs the showβ¦literally. The show is merely a vehicle for promoting the toy line. If they want kids to buy the new Heartstrings toy, they might insist the writerβs name the pony that looks exactly like the toy, Heartstrings. Theyβre not idiots.

Anatomically correct is the closest these things have to canon. Color schemes, personalities and traits...hell, Hasbro can't even get some of their names right.
As it currently is, the green unicorn has no canon name, because the toys are not canon. It's not that hard to understand...at all.
As for "It's not that I don't like Sonic...", your exact words were "Sonic sucks, so it's irrelevent", which you said just so you wouldn't have to consider what I had to say.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-14 18:44:36 +0000 UTC]
You are missing my point. That is: in lieu of other information, the toys are to be accepted as canon. There is no reason to presume otherwise.
Besides, if the toy was released when the show first premiered, this wouldn't even be an issue, admit it. Look at Cheerilee for instance. The toy released was named Cheerilee, but she was never named on the show, and yet the fans presumed the teacher was named Cheerilee. They didn't doubt it then, why doubt it now?
And regarding my comment on Sonic, it was a joke. Plus Yahtzee said it sucks and he is always right, all the time.
Wait a minute, are you taking this personally? Relax my friend, it's just a friendly discussion.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-14 19:12:09 +0000 UTC]
There is plenty of reason to presume otherwise.
Cherilee, just like Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, etc. was based off of a G3 pony. Similarly, Bon Bon, who has never been named, in show or toys, was almost unanimously named Bon Bon by the fans after a G2 pony of the same name.
I don't care what Yahtzee said. In the words of George Carlin, "I like to form my own opinions." You should try it sometime.

I don't understand what your point is.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-14 19:29:07 +0000 UTC]
Likewise. Cherilee was named before G4 even started, therefor her fanon name does not prove anything.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-15 00:14:43 +0000 UTC]
So, you're saying the G3 line is canon, but not the G4 line?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-15 02:32:03 +0000 UTC]
I'm not saying either is canon. I'm saying that several of G4's ponies were based off of and named after G3 ponies. So the fact that a toy named Cherilee came out before she was named on the show means nothing.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-15 16:49:37 +0000 UTC]
Actually, it means everything. It's how the fans interpreted the products. There was no name already on the show, so they decided to take the toys as a reference. I don't see how this is any different.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-15 17:19:03 +0000 UTC]
Because it was clearly Cherilee. Taking into account the show's tendency to base several ponies off of previous generations, fans would've named her Cherilee even if the toys changed her name. This is evident with Bon Bon, who was named after the G2 pony, despite barely resembling her.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-16 03:21:28 +0000 UTC]
Well, I doubt that.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-16 03:33:34 +0000 UTC]
You go ahead and do that, but G4 Cherilee is clearly based off of G3 Cherilee, and the fans would've picked up on this regardless of Hasbro.

BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-16 04:34:54 +0000 UTC]
So now you agree with me, that the toys are a reliable source of information, in lieu of the show proper.

SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-16 05:06:24 +0000 UTC]
Not at all. Princess Celestia is still white, regardless of what Hasbro says. I shouldn't need more examples than that, but I have them, and that's just sad on their part.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-16 16:02:13 +0000 UTC]
I said "in lieu of the show proper"! Are you illiterate, or do you just like ignoring the key points!?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-16 16:33:30 +0000 UTC]
After all the failures Hasbro has thrown at us, they shouldn't be considered canon to the show at all.
The toys are they're own canon, designed exclusively for little girls. The show is a separate canon, designed for people of all ages to enjoy. It's not that hard to figure out.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-17 05:39:33 +0000 UTC]
Hasbro owns the show. You don't. Nor are you the arbiter of good and evil, or pass and fail. What are you? My high school English teacher?
I agree that we can ignore the toys if we want. But my point is: shit the fans made up should be ranked even lower.
What I find perplexing is your argument basically stems from what I can only perceive as anger towards the company that created this show, merely because the toys don't fit your preconceptions.
However, let me put it this way: The Star Wars Holiday Special. Yes, it sucks, sucks worse then anything. Worse than cupcakes! However, it's still considered part of the Star Wars mythos. As Lore Sjoberg put it, "Harvey Korman in drag is an official part of the Star Wars universe...continuity kills."
Is that a good thing? I don't know. But what I do know is: if the owners of the IP say something regarding their IP is true, guess what, it's true.
How would you like it if something you wrote was ignored by it's biggest fans because it didn't fit their preconceptions?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-17 06:22:02 +0000 UTC]
What I am is sighted. I can clearly see that Hasbro's toys have nothing to do with the actual show.
Allow me to use a more appropriate analogy. Stop me if you've heard this before, but Sonic Team made Sonic X. Does that make Sonic X canon to the games? Abso-freaking-lutely not. Does Sonic Team own the rights to Sonic? YES!
It's not a matter of whether or not the toys suck, it's a matter of whether or not they are the same canon as the show, which they clearly aren't. One mistake? Fine. Two mistakes? Understandable. Three mistakes? Pushing it. What Hasbro has managed to accomplish in this short time? Beyond repair. No amount of "But Hasbro owns the franchise" is going to change that.
If Hasbro can't remember the name of or the color of , why are they suddenly reliable when we need a name for
This isn't hard to figure out...at all. If it's not in the show, it's not canon. Simple as that. Those toys can do as they like, but just because they're made by the company that owns the show doesn't mean we have to consider them.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-17 22:29:34 +0000 UTC]
I know all this. I understand all this. I hear you. My point is. UGH! You know what. I made it already. I'm done.
Though as for Sonic. Why isn't it Sonic X part of the Sonic franchise? It's still a Sonic game, therefore, it fits into the same canon as the rest of the games.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-17 22:44:51 +0000 UTC]
Sonic X is not a game, genius.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 00:56:45 +0000 UTC]
Well whatever it is, it's still canon.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 00:59:00 +0000 UTC]
No it isn't. Just because it's made by Sonic Team doesn't make it canon to the games. It is its own continuity. This has been officially confirmed.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 01:02:55 +0000 UTC]
So the creators of the franchise have outright said: this is not part of continuity? When did Hasbro say the toys weren't part of continuity?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 01:08:12 +0000 UTC]
Yes, Sonic X is non canon, despite being made by the same people who make the games. For some reason, this doesn't make sense to you.
Hasbro said the toys weren't part of the continuity when they made Princess Celestia pink so that it would sell more.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 03:52:18 +0000 UTC]
Fine, Sonic X is non-canon. but I told you, I don't play Sonic, so I don't care. You brought it up, and I only needed to know why.
When exactly did Hasbro say that? Do you have a source? Or are you just presuming it from the way they designed the Celestia toy?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 04:27:09 +0000 UTC]
It doesn't matter whether or not you care, it matters whether or not the comparison is relevant, which it is.
Lauren Faust specifically said that the reason Hasbro change the ponies colors and personalities for the toys was so that they would sell more. Faust stated this after people asked her about the pink Celestia, to which Faust herself said she was disgusted with it.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 07:05:43 +0000 UTC]
So? Is Faust currently running the show? No, she's not. She's also not the copyright holder. But even if she was a reliable source, did she ever explicitly state that the toys don't even qualify as Extended Universe?
...and while the comparison may be relevant, it's not apt.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 07:51:24 +0000 UTC]
What is wrong with you? Faust created the show, making her word the Word of God.
Why would she need to directly state that the toys are separate canon when anyone with eyes can tell that they are? "Well, that's a funny shade of white, it almost looks pink to me"
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 16:02:05 +0000 UTC]
Faust got lucky. That's all. I don't care what she says. There is no god.
You apparently don't get what I'm saying. The toys are a source in lieu of the show. The show doesn't answer a question, we need an answer, the toys provide an answer, let's take that answer.
Why are you obsessing over their mistakes anyway?
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 16:32:09 +0000 UTC]
"Word of God" refers to when the creator of a series specifically says something about the show that had no answer before, thus making it official.
For example, Word of God says that Navi has a crush on Link. Word of God says that Tony Tony Chopper's Birthday is Christmas Eve and Buggy the Clown's penis can fly. Word of God says the TF2 Medic is not a Nazi. Word of God says that Invader Zim burned to death after crashing his ship.
Word of God says that the MLP toys are not canon to the show due to changes purposely made by Hasbro to help increase sales. Therefor, assuming the toys have an answer where the show does not is completely preposterous.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 16:48:54 +0000 UTC]
She never outright said the MLP toys are not canon. She said Celestia is not pink. That's not really relevant.
So the toys don't match the show a few times. It doesn't mean they can't be a reliable source of information when there is no other source. Even the worlds greatest Doctors and Scientists are wrong a few times.
Besides, I never said: the toys are canon. I said, when there is no other answer, there is no reason not to just accept the answer the toys give.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-18 17:18:07 +0000 UTC]
She said that Hasbro is willing to do what it takes to sell the toys, even if it includes changing characters completely.
There is plenty of reason to not just accept the answer the toys give, the main reason being the aforementioned "Hasbro is willing to do what it takes to sell the toys" thing. The show is one canon, the toys are another. If Lyra's name has not been specifically stated by the show or Word of God, then she has no official name.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-18 23:25:27 +0000 UTC]
They own the copyright, not Faust. Faust isn't running the show, Hasbro is, so Hasbro's God, not Faust.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-19 00:40:59 +0000 UTC]
Hasbro owns the copyrights, they are not making the show. Faust created the show and its characters. Faust's word is the Word of God above Hasbro's.
Besides, Faust says that the toys are non-canon, and Hasbro has made no statement on it whatsoever.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWidower In reply to SalaComMander [2011-11-20 00:36:59 +0000 UTC]
Neither is Faust. She created the characters and the world, and that's it. She's not what made the show great, the excellent team who brought the show to the screen is what made it great.
You know what. I don't care. I'm done. You're an ass.
π: 0 β©: 1
SalaComMander In reply to BlackWidower [2011-11-20 01:44:57 +0000 UTC]
She created the show. Everyone who worked on the show made it great, yes, but Faust still created the show, thus making her word the Word of God.
Just because what I say contradicts what you think doesn't make me an ass. Grow up.
