As a side note i'm really really happy with how this came out. I've always admired 's shading and I tried to emulate that style a little.
Forgot the magic levitation on the cake, oh well.

There are multiple ways to interpret this and not sure which I want to go with.

Based on that comment, I can only guess you saw the comment-stream that evolved around your picture on Ponibooru. I feel I have to apologize for that, since it is my character that caused that particular disagreement. (Who am I kidding, that was an internet fight in all its horrible glory.) What should have been comments about your art, and how wonderful it is, got taken over by a fight, and again I apologize for that.

If I may say, being someone who only just recently read Past Sins--a fantastic job with that story by the way--I'm not too sure I see a good reason for there to be a controversy. I understand that Nyx bears most of the hallmarks of a Mary Sue character, both in the specific sense of My Little Pony Mary Sues and the more general sense of importance. And yet...she was a good, solid, well developed character. The sort of character that is Nyx is extremely difficult to pull off. I don't think many other writers in the FIM fanfiction community could have done it. In most people's hands she would be forgettable, lame, trite, a wasted idea.
But not in yours. I feel like you surpassed Nyx's origins and the potential stigma to be slapped with the title of Mary Sue and went far beyond that. Nyx is a real, three dimensional character.
So if there's controversy, I say it's mostly unfounded.
