Description I guess the thought of painting it excited me. so Here is the digital painted version. I dunno if having Feanor as a blonde is right since most depictions I've seen so far portrays the elven prince as having dark hair...

removed some of the details though (tower, dead guys, flag) but addd Gothmog's Flame sword... which unfortunately does not stand out

Fastest I've worked so far on a digital painting, and 2nd time on Painter... color corrections on Photoshop

Coo!, But Feanor have black hair, that is the principal difference between him and his brothers Finarfin and Fingolfin

:Irritated:

I know that this comment is 4 years old, but I am really tired of this.

MWAHAHAHA, you call him out on not knowing Feanor's hair colour, when you don't have your facts straight as well...Fingolfin had dark hair, just like Feanor.

Cf. the appendix of the Silmarillion under Finarfin: β€œAlone among the Noldorin princes he and his descendants had golden hair, derived from his mother Indis”, p. 330 in my Harper/Collins edition.

Man, I'm going to look like a LOTR (or Silmarillion, rather) geek, but oh well here goes ...
Phenomenal job here, Carlo (one of my Aunt's is Filipino, btw....and my birthday's only 2 days before yours ...weird) ...even just the epic subject matter - it doesn't really get any more epic than this.
I think the flame sword still reads - the subtlety is nice ...like it's so hot, that the motion just disturbs the area slightly.
-PN
*p.s.1* I think we need a new massive budget take on The Silmarillion, based in part on your image here alone. It needs a kick-a$$ Prologue speech from Kate Blanchett again and well... lot's of eye-candy and bombast.
p.s.2 what's 'ainter' (as opposed Photoshop)??
p.s.3. you should consider doing a Severian pic. - from Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun" (or more similarily and recently Wolfe's "The Knight")
[link]

...and maybe George R.R. Martin's schtuff (one of the best fantasy writers out there but almost not in the same league as Wolfe).

thanks will try to read books you mentioned...
Bill gates should produce Silmarillion hehehe

painter is a painting program and is a lot more accurate in simulating various painting mediums. Photoshop is more on the photoediting side... You could also rotate your canvas on painter more freely

I would love to see either a full-length movie adaptation or an HBO series of the Silmarillon; arguably J.R.R. Tolkien's best work next to Lord of the Rings.

This Feanor vs. Gothmog rendition is absolutely awesome!

How about a Beren & Luthien!?

holy pipe weed! this is hiper-blaster-megar-super-duper-cooool!
the red sword is really something you'd expect of feΓ€nor (although not descripted in the book)...I bet he'd step up to his brother and say: "look fingolfin, I have a red-ruby custom-made-sword designed by myself and you don't! boo-ya! lol XD

...the only step-back,i suppose is his blonde hair...FeΓ€nor was dark haired!, but that is just a minor, even john howe has his loose ends..*tuor is blonde not dark, johnie*

I do love this, but Gothmog looks too much like the Balrog in Moria. Mabe a little something to make him stand out?

dane900 [2007-01-28 15:08:59 +0000 UTC]

According to Tolkien, among the Noldor blonde hair was pretty rare and usually came from someone who'd married one of the Vanyar. Officially, Feanor (and almost all his people, right down the line to the Men of Gondor) had dark hair and grey eyes.

Nevertheless... OMFG dude this is an amazing work. So much energy, such an awesome moment in the Silmarillion, you've done an amazing job. Metaphorical top marks.

the fire is great and the glows work well the only problem I have with it is the helm style, which seems a bit plain for the king of the Noldor

feanor was described in the book to have had dark raven hair. his half-brothers fingolfin and finarfin were golden-haired. the only other thing thats slightly off in this painting is the book decribes his tall helm to be crowned with a feathered plume of red.

beautiful painting... lemme know if you edit it.

Wonderful job!! I love the details on Feanor's sword and his armor!! Beautiful! I can't remember if he had dark hair or light hair, but seeing as dark seems to run in the Noldor, maybe he did have dark hair. After all, he was one of Elrond's forefathers... Who knows? Well done! Navaer!

as I have said, I know he had dark hair, but I decided on this hair color because I thought it would do much better for this compo. And this is still in my re make list. one with a proper color. Treat this as a draft of sort

Nice work, though I would've liked Feanor's hair to be dark. Yes that is a Balrog. He is Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs and was in Morgoth's favour on par with Sauron's level. You people should pick up a copy of the Silmarillion =] It's a good read and gives you alot more background on the Middle Earth and reference to the LoTR.

Let's keep the version that the balrog's light reflected in his raven black locks Maybe making them black with blue lights would work?
Great capture - strong, determined FΓ«anor and the evil of fire and smoke. Your balrog looks great, not that simply conkrete as in the movie. Great job!
