Description
I guess the thought of painting it excited me. so Here is the digital painted version. I dunno if having Feanor as a blonde is right since most depictions I've seen so far portrays the elven prince as having dark hair...removed some of the details though (tower, dead guys, flag) but addd Gothmog's Flame sword... which unfortunately does not stand out
Fastest I've worked so far on a digital painting, and 2nd time on Painter... color corrections on Photoshop

Very cool work of course, but as has been said a million times here, FΓ«anor had dark hair. It is also easy to confuse with the same Glorfindel, not so much because of the color of hair, but because of the number of opponents, because as you know, FΓ«anor fought not one Balrog (as Fingon, Ecthelion and Glorfindel), but they were surrounded and enveloped by their fire (Tolkien wrote that the Balrogs were no more than 7). Something is very doubtful that Balrogs had a sense of honor, and they fought with FΡanor in turn, although it's not even a question - this is nonsense. I certainly understand that everyone has his vision of the picture of what happened, but, as it is one of the most suitable in terms of visual artifacts (again - very nice painted!), On the theme of the last fight of FΓ«anor, l would like to see more deployed at scale, picture this fight, unless of course it is possible. With respect!

Shouldn't Gothmog also have the usual Balrog weapon of a whip of fire?
There are lots of comments here about it, but Feanor is definitely dark-haired (there are multiple references in the Silmarillion).
Quite good.

It's a very good picture. Ecellent perspective and take on the duel. However, Feanor, does have black hair (describe din The Silmarillion), but in the case of this particular instance, I think Tolkien fans will forgive Β for something as simple as hair color. Β Β

Ahh Feanor, the angriest Elf. He messes up so much stuff, but he's so badass doing it that you have to admire him.

I admire your skill in colouring, and the armour looks cool, but for Silmarillion geeks like me, seeing Feanor blond is one of the most horrible things I have ever seen, as it goes against the canon like totally. The hair colour of the elves is very important, especially since it denotes their kindred. Feanor is a pure blooded Noldo, therefore he has dark hair. He is described in the book as such. The only Noldor who are blond have Vanya blood in them, like Finrafin and his children and Glorfindel.

Arguably one of the battles that defined the history of all of Ea.

I love that there are artists out there who have the flash of inspiration which comes from somewhere other than the movies. Don't get me wrong, a lot of talented artists do great renderings of those featured in the movies, but it tends to be very streamlines, with everything having a defined appearance and limited scope as far as imagination and creativity. Going off the books, or using characters that come from them, lets you use a lot more freedom.

This looks pretty good. I think your ideas on his armor are interesting.
Also, his hair was described in the Silmarillion as being "raven dark", so blond is not accurate.

Totally epic scene! Sorry if I dont saw it before.
About the hair color I suppose its right since Feanor was a pure elf of 1st Era.
Elfs with dark hair and/or grayed eyes MUST be a half-elf like Elrond or Arwen.

The color you have used here just makes everything pop out really well. The description of a balrog is "wreathed in flame" and you really hit it well.

In fact Feanor doesn't look like Feanor (hair)...
But balrog (valarauko) is really great - "fear the fury of flames"

Masamune777 [2009-03-15 04:11:16 +0000 UTC]
Gothmog never had a flame sword. He was armed with a giant, black axe, something which separated him from the other Balrogs...

Great work. Any plans of making something serious about The Silmarilion???
Would be great.

i dont understand. so is there 2 gothmogs in the lord of the rings or is the one from the movie not a real character?

I think the Gothmog in the movies; the orc general, was a call out to the Balrog Gothmog... who if i remember correctly is also somewhat of a general in the same ranks as Sauron (before he took over)

you may want to read The Silmarillion... it's basically the whole myth of Middle Earth, and you'll get the scene depicted here (and spot its errors hehe)
