Sparks interesting discussion. Definitely of the opinion that corporation is a tool not a person.

I think corporations should be given rights as entities representing people, but should not be considered people. Basically, a corporation can have certain rights such as free speech, owning property, suing and being sued, but has different rules applied to it, such as different tax systems and regulations.
For example, a person can lie freely as long as the lie does not involve the transfer of goods or services. A business can never lie, because everything they do is about goods and services. A business, or a person acting in the name of a business, cannot falsely advertise, lie about the contents of its products, lie about its competitors, etc, or it will be charged.
I really hate the 'corporations are people' slogan. They aren't. They are non-physical entities that are operated by people. They are in their own category, given free speech because they are operated by people, but limited in that right by their inherent connection to the exchange of goods and services.

hmm interesting question...why is a group of people not considered 'people'? because they are joined together?

The problem with corporations being people, is that not everyone in the corporation has the same ideas, and can have radically different ideologies or thoughts for what is good for the company in both long and short term. Also, what is good for the company may not be good for the people working for the company. Since corporations in capitalist economics are not owned by everyone who works for it, instead it is owned controlled by a few majority shareholders, many who aren't even apart of the company, corporate person-hood allows those few to essentially speak for all of those people, which I think is an affront to democracy.

Thats true..I think democracy and capitalism together is an oxymoronic idea..or just moronic I mean not in every way but in the sense that democracy is meant to make it equal for everyone and capitalism seems to want to do that opportunity-wise but essentially what it does is make a few rich and many poor. Maybe if people weren't so evil, they wouldn't take advantage of people who work for them so much. well look what i've started! this isn't even my comic and im getting all these answers to my silly question because i know too little!
thanks for replying.

A corporation is not a group of people. You could sack every single employee and swap every single shareholder and the corporation would still exist.

but in fact its still a group of people..even if the people change in and out? i mean theoretically, in real life i know thats not how it works...but if i think about it as a basic idea..its a group of people...? i dont know much about it though

Business is meant to serve people and make profit. That's it. Its central element, the corporation, is an entity with no feelings or willpower of its own, nor is it designed to reflect, express of perpetuate any particular position or opinion. It is, quite simply, a tool, and nothing else. It can't be considered to be "a group of people" any more than, say, a bus or a theater.

poluptukha In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2012-08-21 13:25:50 +0000 UTC]
I see. comparing it to a bus does make it seem clearer...as a tool.
but the business's aim is to make money for people, why then do so many of its own employees, who would by logic work better if happy, get totally cheated out of their share? I mean i know they take less risk, have less skill etc...but the proportion of profit that goes to the few is insulting to democracy. I think so but as i said i know little about the workings of business...only hear what happens when they get sued! or put in jail..i just think theoretically that as a tool used by humans it should be controllable and therefore profitable to anyone participating..you could say that this is happening but on the distant far side of the spectrum of fairness...which leads to huge amounts in bonuses for already wealthy people. Ok they are the educated risk takers, they are necessary ..at the same time they lay off thousands of employees, whom without, the company would not exist. im dreaming arent i?

Definitely, though I like the way you think.
The bottom line is that capitalism and democracy may sometimes go hand in hand, but they're not one and the same, and from time to time, they may actually be mutually exclusive.

yes thats what i tried to ask/say but less eloquently
I wonder when we will get a new kind of government/system of business that works for everyone. I mean i know its not going to happen, but just for a moment imagine what it could be like...kind of cool. no poverty, hunger or lack of education...i think there would have to be serious population control because of lack of jobs! lol..or like how would you decide who is a janitor and who is the head of state? ok dreaming again! sorry thanks for replying

Because Mcdonald's may consist of hundreds of thousands of epeople, but they way they exercise their political clout is not a reflection of a unified belief structure. Is there a corporation that works that way?

poluptukha In reply to scythepuppet [2012-08-19 08:23:26 +0000 UTC]
i dont know...but how is this about mcdonalds? you mean as an example? I guess there isn't a corp that behaves that way...even the government XD "for the people of the people by the people" not.

scythepuppet In reply to poluptukha [2012-08-19 14:27:06 +0000 UTC]
However, I have a degree of control over what happens in government. If the government doesn't do what I want, it's usually because there are more people who want something else. Or because a corporation, with its deep pockets, can create influences that I cannot hope to match.
But don't pretend that a corporation is some noble organization speaking for the desires of anybody but its own board.

poluptukha In reply to scythepuppet [2012-08-19 15:22:05 +0000 UTC]
Its NOT noble! not at all! the opposite for sure! but im saying that its actually "a group of people" so why can't it work in a noble way like why isn't ONE SINGLE board in control of any corporation actually changing the way it runs itself to benefiting the entire group instead of such disgusting inequality. I mean as individuals we both understand how 'nice' that sounds so why doesn't it ever happen in reality ? Are humans that corruptible? it seems kind of depressing....thanks for the reply im sure Gyno-Star is going to be thrilled...lol sorry!

scythepuppet In reply to poluptukha [2012-08-19 16:20:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, boards don't exist to benefit their employees beyond whatever compensation their employees receive, they exist to ensure that a company produces maximum profits for its shareholders. Generally speaking of course. That's what they do, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that... But to pretend that... Dan Cathy speaks for Chick-fil-a cashier #22318 when he funds anti-gay legislation is silly.

poluptukha In reply to scythepuppet [2012-08-19 16:48:49 +0000 UTC]
Yes but can't they produce maximum profits for the share holders but at the same time instead of giving themselves GIANT bonus packages..punZ XD..they could distribute it in such a way that the little work also gets to live well? I mean seriously how hard can that be? I hate how business runs...lol...but thats how it must be. Yes also your last point is there, they use their power to do retarded things...like control governments, that could be stopped by making it a law that each candidate is allowed a certain amount ONLY...and it must be like government funded or something..?

scythepuppet In reply to poluptukha [2012-08-22 15:27:19 +0000 UTC]
There are laws, and ways around laws. That's sort of how it goes. And look at it this way: if you raked a yard, and someone gave a check for a million dollars, would you pay $1000 to the guy who sold you the rake, $1000 to the guy who taught you to drive, and so on? People take these bonuses because that's a horrifying amount of money and the reptile brain looks at it and says "Fuck yes."

poluptukha In reply to scythepuppet [2012-08-22 15:41:46 +0000 UTC]
Well yes, a million dollars is HUGE compared to a thousand. And in order for the driver or rake seller to want to continue to work for me, i would want to keep them happy....and yes reptile brains are the problem...maybe once you have the choice in front of you of taking the money or not its a different story but its hard to imagine as i am now - wanting to take so much for me and give back so little to people supporting entire families etc...I know its not realistic to think this way but i just wanted to put it out there lol thanks for replying
