EDIT: RESCANNED FOR MUCH BETTER IMAGE.The original is still better, of course - it's gentler somehow, less harsh. But at least now the colors and values are pretty much right.
Also, I'm leaving this artist's comment as-is, even though some bits sound silly or naive now, because it's such a documentation of where I was at the time.

OK, so I've known I would have to draw this picture since way back in February, when all of us on the CiD forums were talking about (among other random things) spark-bonding, and things culminated in our own dear Megs posting the following:

Which, if you've seen her gallery, hornetcharmer.deviantart.com/g… is absolutely the cutest mental image ever spawned. So I nervously typed out my first-ever (semi-cute) RP post. After which I got suddenly serious and fell completely in love with the idea of a spark-bond between those two as a means of figuring out all their Crap so they could finally Drop it, and [insert flailing here] Stop This Senseless War!!!!!
I keep claiming that a spark bond in itself is nothing more or less than a complete and mutual soul-knowing: the most intimate, selfless, humble, uninhibited thing a transformer can do, but totally unrelated to anything like sex unless you make it be so. But I still worried so much about doing a picture like this. I mean, how was it any different from the myriads of other OP/Megs pictures out there? How could I make it different? Because if they were just getting together to yank each others' cables, I wasn't going to have any part of it...
A whole lot of people had to deal with my crap as I tried to figure out where I stood on this issue. If I cared less, it would have been a lot easier; but I felt like I was on to something that, at its core, might be profound, [more flailing] and I didn't want it ruined!
Finally, after much kind encouragement, I decided to go ahead and try to express my idee fixe, if only to stop it from eating me up from the inside. I buckled down to work. I don't think I have never in my life put so much effort and thought into any picture - and I was an art major in college! It will be wonderful to have this finished and posted. I am kind of desperate to see what people think of it, now.
I love this picture with all my heart and soul, imperfect though it may be, because I love the idea so much. I've always sought peace through understanding, and I guess this is my way of expressing that desire. After I've pretended to be Prime for so long, this is how it all comes out, I guess! (Do you have any idea how REAL this is for me? I blinking know what it FEELS like, for Primus' sake!)
I can't imagine Prime or Megatron entering into this kind of a spark-bond with anyone other than each other. Who else could handle all their crap, for one thing??? (They each carry around a LOT of internal craaaap.) Wouldn't it be a relief to finally put it all DOWN, sort it all out, and help each other carry it? They're both such strong leaders - wouldn't it be wonderful if they could at last work TOGETHER to FIX all of said crap, instead of constantly pulling things apart between them?
Yeah. The deeper I get into Prime, the more I long for this kind of denouement. To all of the people who might be offended by the very idea, I apologize. To anyone who wants to just save this into their "HOT ROBOT LOVIN'!" folder, go ahead, but you're missin' the whole point. (I'm a hypocritical snob to the last!)

I'm going to repeat what you've already heard and say that I like the way they're mirror images, but more than that, I love the way they're holding onto each other, seeking comfort and empathy, and I like how their guns are placed off to the side, abandoning conflict in favor of unity. Wonderful, wonderful work!
The color and symmetry make for a really nice picture. (And I love what you wrote about it, too, because I couldn't agree more! Like I said, this kind of profound non-slashy stuff is very rare and I love it with all my heart.)

Yes, I do like them as a pairing, but I think this is really good and I do get your message. I can see Megatron and Optimus doing the spark bonding as a way to bury the hatchet and end the war. According to Exiles, they were friends to begin with and had the same goals for Cybertron, they just had different approaches to reaching that goal.

Man, it's nice to see that someone out there doesn't interpret spark bonding as sex. I swear, you're like, the only other person on the internet I've seen so far. ;_;
I really love the almost painted look this piece has. The weapons being around the edge is a nice touch. There's a very "yin-yang" sort of sense to this picture, since Prime and Megatron are pretty much mirror images of one another. I think it looks lovely. Very nice work!

Finally someone who agrees! I enjoy 'robo lovin' as much as the next person, but in the end I support sparkbonding, which I believe to be the purest, most intimate bond possible. To share your very life force, the essence of who you are, every emotion, thought and memory that has shaped your existence since the start...that cannot be described as another way for Cybertronians to 'get it on'.
I also use sparkbonding in my stories as the only alternative for reproduction aside from Allspark energy/etc. (Don't worry. None of that ridiculous Transformers with wombs thing going on.)
But this is gorgeous, gorgeous work. People will categorize and describe this as they will, but no matter what anyone else thinks, stand and be proud of the beauty you've created. The beauty behind your own thoughts and beliefs and emotional connections is what truly makes art art.

Has a very Stained Glass appearance to it. I like it. Very deep and emotional too, showing bonds once forged, then broken, could possibly be forged again. Nice work.

Wow, this actually goes pretty deep. When I saw this in the serach i was thinking yaoi. But after the reading-and after looking over the companion piece to this, I see they created a spark bond to stop the war going on between Decepticons and Autobots to bring them together in piece and harmony.

Faved this a week or two back, but here to comment now. And I hope I can offer something that hasn't already been said a dozen times.
I have to admit, I've admired this pic for a long time, but only recently got up the courage to fave it. It's such a touching piece, especially with the story and explanation you've provided behind it, but I've long been rather "what the..." regarding anything that could be considered romantic between Oppy and Megs -- it squicks me out a bit more than the usual slash does. And I have to be honest, I was scared that my watchers would lose respect for me when, after I've come out against slash quite a bit, they find something that could be misconstrued as slashy in my favorites. But I guess I have to take that risk, because neither of us can control what others think.
That said (and I apologize for any offense I may have caused), this really is beautiful, both in a technical sense and in a meaningful sense. Gah, I WISH I could draw like this! Wonderful linework, muted colors to provide atmosphere, and the lighting coming from the sparks... just wow. And seeing these two great mechs (to paraphrase Harry Potter, Megatron has done great things, terrible but great) put aside their egos and their enmity for the greater good and being willing to do this ultimate selfless thing... it's amazing. I guess I've had the fantasy of both sides just laying down their arms and trying to sort their crap out peacably for awhile too, but I just couldn't see how it could happen -- too much "bad blood" between them. Still, one has to have hope...
I think my favorite detail has to be their helms touching. Kind of a quiet and subtle way of saying "Lean on me, I'll help you carry it."

As you probably know, a compliment and/or fave from someone who 'usually doesn't like this sort of thing' (even when it's Not Like That!) means a lot more than the same thing from the shippers. And this is still -- and probably always will be -- my favorite thing I've done. So never fear -- I'm not offended in the least. Although I must say I've become a lot more understanding of the slashers as I've worked through this story. Having a scenario which I feel this passionate about, I realize that, amongst the "Pronstalkers," as Chromia calls them, there are probably a few people who actually NEED _____ and _____ to be together in a romantic way, the same way I NEED this whole thing with Megatron to work out. So I'm willing to let be, I guess.
I love having their helms touching, as well. Verily, it is fuzzy! Making up gestures unique to their culture as I understand it has been really fun.

I know where you're coming from about understanding the slashers more. I've made some friends that are slash fans, and just because they like different things than we do doesn't mean they're bad people. And to be honest, if I'm going to ship the crazy pairings I do (Arcee and Swoop, Megatron and Maleficent), then I can at least be understanding of the slashers even if I don't like to look at their art/fic.
We do have to realize that these giant robots from another planet probably have a different culture than we do, and it is fun coming up with details such as gestures and expressions of emotion. One thing I like to do is use wings or doorwings to signify emotion, or the brightness of the optics to indicate the intensity of a particular emotion. (That last IS canon, since Megatron's optics seem to shine brighter whenever he's especially pleased with something.)

hmmm this is awesome! I totally get your point and I agree that they are both good leaders, great amazing leaders at the most. and it's about time they sort things out. It kind of reminds me of YinYang a little. Just the pose and the fact that they are "light" and "dark" it kind of symbolizes a mutual peace between the two to me. not smoething slashy at all

hmmm I listen to a variety but it's mostly a good orchastrated movie score. I absolutely love a good orchestrated movie soundtrack. Mostly from Hans Zimmer, Steve Jablosnky composers like that. Good old fashoined church hymes accompanied with a pipe organ (I'm in my church's chior) but Like I said I listen to a wide variety of music and I find that if you can't feel the music's emotions then it is nothing more than words, numbers, dots and lines on a piece of paper. Music means something and if you listen closely enough you'll find it

I looked hard and didn't find it slashy. I'm a slash lover (well, not exactly an OpxMeg fan) but as I love the warm feeling slash pics give me -- here I haven't got one. So, you did extremely well, accomplishing a view where only intimacy is present without sex. Mahbe it is because you posed them not sitting in each others lap, or the way they holding each other -- those hands on helmets look like reassuring gestures, encouraging each other to stare into the light...
I do appreciate your thoughts shared here, and can tell that for long time I felt the same way, and the first thing hooked me into TFs was the intimacy of friendship between the Autobots; I wished that feeling was to extend towards the Cons as well...
Here at DA I first met the term slash, and it was a long journey to my mind to accept it but since that I'm ... khm... pretty a fan of it. Still, I can imagine other relations as well as comradeship or pure honor, so your pic is highly adored by me. And yes, for me takes ages too to post a pic or even make a lineart from the sketch scanned, not to mention I cant color or do shades and when I did it was painfully slow and exhausting... my fanfiction lay in the drawer for more than a 1 year now, I dont have the courage to post because it is sooo average and overdone by others. *struggles for originality*
Your pic is wonderful both by the dark dim colors which make atmosphere and by the overall position which reminds me a Yin-Yang thing; opposite fractions of the whole and the center light of shared spark just emphasize your idea of union. Very damn good pic in so many aspects.

I have a VERY literal mind, so much of the slash out there just seems silly to me. They're robots, not people! They work differently! I too love the friendships between Autobots, but want them to be based on more than just ...

Yeah they're robots... and more. They're our fantasies, serve us well... I dun like pointless sex or watching porn movies but I do love those robots and their love-life (haha, we're talking about alien mechanical beings ^^) moves me. I love them to be loved.
