Description
I finally got this one DONE!Many, many thanks to for letting me color her amazing sketchy: [link]
I think I still like the original sketch better than my colored version - or any possible colored version. It's just so simple and real - you feel it.
I tried to keep the looseness of the original, and did pretty well. This one was blinkin' hard for some reason. It took me forever to just face up to it and plow through till I got the colors right. Being stuck in the hospital with baby Magnus helped, eh? It was funny - the nurses would come in, and be impressed, and ask if I'd "drawn that." To which I would sheepishly reply, "No... I'm just coloring it..." In the end, I started hiding my work, since I was doing a ton of mock-ups to work through colors and fix mistakes, making it look like I was coloring the same picture over and over again, and doing a bad job of it to boot. (Mock-ups are inherently messy, and covered with penciled-in notations.)
I would like to take this opportunity to bow before If you haven't trolled through her TF sketchies, I implore you to do so. Very, very few people draw Giant!Robots! From!Space! looking so, well, human. Great Stuff. Keep it up, pal!
Oh! I almost forgot to tell y'all...
This is the first time I've tried coloring on colored paper. This was a piece of greenish-gray cardstock. I wanted to mute everything -- especially the reds -- and to bring an underlying harmony to all of the colors I used. I was also getting kind of sick of having to work with the same colors all the time. Working on colored paper tinted and muted them all so that they were "new" again, and different. It was a lot of fun.
I hope you all enjoy this.
Love, Prime

Would you like me to make a journal giving credits?
I don't know if there is a way to show credits on the webcam...

Excellent colour job!
I really like the way you've varied the tones here, and produced a palette of complimentary shades in the piece. You get top marks for not losing interest once the character was rendered - the rock face looks really good, all those variances at work again.
Working on coloured paper seems to suit you!

I got the huge image.
Now to get to work!
Like I said, it'll probably take me a while, because I'm in the middle of several other projects right now. But I'm really looking forward to doing this.

This is one of my favorite pictures Laguna has done. How wonderful to see it colored! You did well. The way you colored this amplifies the emotions expressed here.

That's intense!!!! Great work Prime!!
I dunno why, but the optics are really sanding out to me... I like it

I cheated on the optics, and used a colored pencil on them to make the glow. (I almost always have to, since markers come out really dull no matter what I do.)
I'm glad you like it, pal!

Oh man, beautiful texture and colours. It really brings out the feeling in the picture. Now if only I could get my hands on card stock like that where I stay... And nice work!

Thank you very much!
It wasn't fancy cardstock or anything; if you can get to any kind of office supply store, they might have something like it...

That's why I loved this sketch so much - the emotion!
I'm just glad to hear that my coloring it didn't take away from the feeling of the original.

Thanks pal.
Yeah -- I got a bunch of colored cardstocks from my real-life artist friend "Grapple," and am looking forward to experimenting. One of the things that happened in this one that I hadn't expected is the way the paper's texture shows through if I color fast... (i.e. the background) I'll have to practice controlling that effect, 'cause it's a spiffy one!

You're welcome!
Have you ever tried to colour / draw with pens that are running out? You'll get the same "grainy" effect, but won't have to slow down so much

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. Prime, you've gone and done it again. You've made this piece shine, my friend. It looks just as alive as the original sketch, and it really has this amazingly raw feel to it. I think it's the cardstock.
How is Mini Magnus doing? He recovering all right? And howzabout you? You're not down in the sickness dumps, are you? I've been meaning to ask, but homework's been cutting in on my any free Internets time. *sad face* Ah, well. Education for a better tomorrow, and all that. At any rate, I hope you and the robo-family are doing well, 'specially with all the crazy weather fronts blowing the forecasts all to slag. Be safe, Prime. I'm rooting for Magnus' first year (and your first year with him) to be a smooth one, safety and health wise. Blessings on you and your kin, Prime. Peace!

I'm so glad my art friend hooked me up with cardstock. I would never have thought to try it... (I tend to get into ruts in my ways of doing things.) Isn't the paper texture effect cool??
Magnus spent 5 days in the hospital, getting oxygen, having his nose vacuumed out, and being monitored. Both of us needed the rest. Everyone is finally getting better now. Whew!!
(And thank goodness for Medicaid, which made that hospital stay possible! Someday, I will not be poor and on welfare. But until then, I'm VERY GRATEFUL for it!!)
