Description ...And another version of this sketch [link] by

I actually think this one is even better than the Skywarp one, [link] color-wise.

The funny thing is, I sweated for MONTHS over these. I wanted to try coloring more in the style of when he does his markers-on-colored-paper stuff. But it just wasn't coming for me. It felt like I was trying to be someone I'm not. But the other night, I took these and just went at them - no test-sheets, no sweating; I just colored. And they came out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. I'm happy with them, anyway. I don't color exactly like Alex does. But I don't want to, either. We're different people; we color differently.

Markers and colored pencil on colored paper.

My Dad does this - falls asleep in front of the television and starts snoring, then chokes on his own snore ("*snort") and nearly (but not quite) wakes up.

Thanks! That's what I loved about this lineart, too. I was grateful to be able to color it.

This cracks me up, and I think it's partiatlly the paper it was drawn on. Something about the image of a huge alie-robot on a tiny piece of paper is hilarious.

Glad to amuse

I wish I was the kind of person who sketched epic pictures in their notebook while bored. But alas, thus far I only color them...

sorry, hit the wrong button. Anyway, as I was going to say, this is a wonderful piece, not just for the subject matter, but for the obvious spontaneity. It's almost like a 'drawn photograph'. such a cool piece deserves to be framed, you know ^-^

I can't take any credit for the sketch; I just colored it. But it is a GREAT, as you say, spontaneity.

I just felt lucky to get to work with it!

Ooo, you did TC too He looks good, the markering is so smooth. Are the white bits marker or something else?

Do you find it easier or harder to color sketches, as opposed to finished lineart?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Ha-HeePrime In reply to crawdadEmily [2009-08-08 18:34:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah - to answer your other question, the white bits are white colored pencil, which is opaque so it pops off the darker paper. I've started using more and more colored pencil, whenever the markers sink into the paper too much...

crawdadEmily In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2009-08-08 19:12:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah, colored pencil! That makes sense.

Ha-HeePrime In reply to crawdadEmily [2009-08-08 18:30:29 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I'm starting to like coloring sketches more than finished lineart. It really depends on the art itself - if the sketch is really unfinished - like Robby's Magnus - it can be a little hard, if I feel like I need to add something to the base sketch to make it work in color. Making the styles mesh is tricky, and I always feel like I'm defacing or cheating somehow. On the other hand, if the lineart is very smooth, but the surfaces are left blank, so all I have is the outlines, I get terrified. I don't know what to do with something so simple! I have to make up a lot in that instance, too.

So yeah - there are hard and easy bits in everything.

Ooo, I understand what you mean about just plain line art with no surface detail/basic shadowing. The emptiness... I suppose there are so many possible treatments its hard to pick one, hmm.
