Description Is...is this a job for human rights activists or for PETA?

Okay, this is something that has bothered me for years, and in all sorts of medium.
So I'm furnishing my little Animal Crossing cottage, right? But I don't know if I'm comfortable with keeping a caged canary (which is a furniture item) in the window when my next-door neighbor is a talking, four-foot-tall robin.

It's the same thing in what was one of my favorite childrens's show, Arthur , too. He's got a little pet dog, but one of his best friends is also a dog. And it happens again with Goofy and Pluto of the Disney universe; both are dogs, but they live in different castes of domestic hierarchy. What is this?

And when you encounter this sort of thing at such a young age, it's...I don't know, it's just crippling.

Wow, I was wondering the same thing..

When I put the bird in the cottage, I was wondering why there was another bird as my neighbor!

But I agree, there should be some kind of movie or game where your an animal, and your friend is a human, but your have a human as a pet too! Yeah!

Hey, I thought the same thing! I was always trying to pronounce it "Gisney" for YEARS! Then I learned in the 5th grade... it was a D. But it always puzzled me about how they called it Disney, but it was spelt Gisney... now, at least, I figured out that mystery of life!

Gisney can be so confusing...

Wow. Thats like the pokemon thing:
They all say their OWN names, which should make it its own language, but all the other pokemon can understand it just fine. How can Pikachu understand what Raichu says?
How can Goofy live knowing hes walking a domesticated lower form of his kind?

Well..now they sound totally different. But, I think you got it.

Never bothered me

Goofy is smart enough to talk and wear pants, Pluto isn't. Hence Pluto fits into the "pet" roll while Goofy is a "friend."

Course, that leaves Scooby Doo and Doonald Duck in certain a bit of a nebulous situation, but them's the breaks.

And (just to furthur break brains) if the dog IS considered the same as the ones in the window, and it brought you the leash and asked for walkies, is it still abuse, or just kinky?

I once was told a Disney employee explained it as such: if they wear clothes, they're like people. If they don't like, they're like domesticated animals.

And when you are an animal-creature, in a animal-creatures world... is it cannibalism to eat meat? I think one of Mikey's friend makes a joke about it in one of their older stories.

inslet In reply to ??? [2007-05-29 01:54:17 +0000 UTC]

it's simple, really. antropomorphic animals are just stand-ins for people. bugs bunny is a human with long ears. Us humans like to put our faces on everything, and use other animals to represent characteristics in ourselves. so goofy is a human in dog form while pluto is just a dog.
...okay, so it's still weird.. and maybe not so simple.

Feh...furries encounter the same moral-justice things with stuff like that. We just learn to ignore it. There's a big difference between anthropomorphic animals and feral animals.

Heheh, good idea though.

ckret [2007-05-29 01:42:08 +0000 UTC]

And here I thought I was the only one who wondered about stuff like that.

My personal explanation is that they're not pets, they're mentally disabled animals that the normal, more intelligent animals kindly adopt to love and take care of. They just call them "pets" because that word isn't used for anything else in their universe.

I've given this way too much thought.

Splits in cartoon evolution. While both are the same (or similar) species, one evolved along the line to becoming a giant sentient humanoid one, while the other went along the line of domesticated normal sized not considered sentient or humanoid one
