Umibouzu (海坊主): Sometime also known as "Umihoushi" (海法師; Sea Priest) is a gigantic sea yokai but could also be a paranormal phenomena occurred in the sea. This yokai has been seen throughout Japan from ancient time to early 1900s. There are many records about seeing them but none can tell what Umibouzu actually is. In the old tale, it's said that Umibouzu might be the spirits of the priests who were thrown into the ocean or the sacrifices who were thrown into the sea alive to prevent the natural disasters such as storms and tsunami. Hatred and sorrow turned those souls into a yokai and haunted in deep ocean. This yokai stays mysterious and once in a century or longer, it would appear at night as a gigantic humanoid dark shadow. It would bring natural disasters and crash the fisherman ships, taking souls whoever come across it.
