[Edit 2: altered the Razortooth a bit and added some new notes]
[Edit 3: REDESIGNED THE DREADNOUGHT]
[edit 4: refined the picture and rewrote some of the info about the breeds]
The Saurine(saur-EEN) or Dragons as we call them are the indigenous people of Valspire. despite their bestial appearance they are just as smart as humans and elves; fully capable of speech and reasoning. for millenia they ruled Valspire until the settlers who would become the Nords came from the south to claim Valspire's lands as their own over 1000 years ago. the Saurine were governed by The 7 Elder Dragons (Alt'Saurine) who maintained order among the different breeds of dragons with the Alphas of each breed ensuring all members of their respective breeds stayed in line. now the Saurine are a shadow of the great and prosperous people they were as the famous "Valspirian Dragon Wars" devastated the race. today only one of the 7 elder dragons remains and does his best to guide what's left of his people in the Valspirian Hinterlands where the entire race lives, away from the Nords
pictured above are the alphas of the 5 breeds of dragons that still roam Valspire
The Iron-jaw
Height: 8-10 feet tall/ 30-40 feet long
Weight: 2-4 tons
Diet: Carnivore
Alpha: Nihlus
Description:
Iron-Jaws are the largest and most fearsome of the dragons, often called "The Kings of the Dragons" Iron-Jaws are the only dragon that can endure sustained periods of combat while most others prefer quick "hit and run" methods of fighting. Iron-Jaws live in the eastern area of the hinterlands either alone or in family groups. being hunters they like to chase down their prey either on the ground or in the air using their incredible bite force to ensure a kill. Ironjaws also seem to enjoy fighting with one another, as sort of a way to test each other’s strength
Notable Iron-jaws:
Nihlus(pictured above)
Storm
Red Eye
The Razortooth
Height: 5-6 feet/ 10-15 feet long
Weight: 300-400 lbs
Diet: Carnivore
Alpha: Bestra
Description:
Razortooths are known as "The wolves of the Dragons" due to their small size, smallest of the dragons, and their tendency to hunt in packs. Razortooths are evidently the only dragons that care about gender as only females are permitted to become alphas and elders. a Razortooth hunting party consists of 5 dragons, 4 males and one female whom acts as pack leader, giving orders and choosing targets while the males do all the hard work, running down and chasing prey. if the pack leader is killed by the would be prey the males must secure the kill and present it to the alpha as an offering of forgiveness, having dishonored their breed. if the kill isn't secured, any remaining pack members are banished
Notable Razortooths:
Bestra(pictured above)
Alae
Sa'Luuk
Velos
The Featherwing
Height: 12'15 feet tall/ equally as long
Weight: 600 lbs on average
Diet: Piscivore(fish eater)
Alpha: Sula
Description:
though one might see them as giant birds, Featherwings are just as much a dragon as an Ironjaw; a docile dragon but a dragon none the less. Inhabiting the costal cliffs of the western Hinterlands Featherwings enjoy a diet of fish and are a common sight for fisherman and sailors. What makes the Featherwing truly worth note however, is that Aeon, the last Elder Dragon is a Featherwing himself
Notable Featherwings:
Sula(pictured above)
Rook
Aeon(the last Elder Dragon)
The Dreadnought
Height: 7 feet tall/ 17- 20 feet long on average
Weight: 3-5 tons
Diet: Herbivore
Alpha: Valus
Description:
One of the most bizarre looking dragons, the Dreadnought is actually nothing to Dread being a peaceful herbivore happily munching on fruit and underwater vegetation. Lacking wings, these hardy dragons are able to swim at blinding speeds thanks to their powerful tails. While other dragons enjoy solid terrain Dreadnoughts reel in the swampy wetlands and rivers of the Hinterlands.
Notable Dreadnoughts:
Valus(pictured above)
Sten
Granok
The Thunderhorn
Height: 9 feet tall/ 20 feet long on average
Weight: 2-3 tons
Diet: Herbivore
Alpha: Maelstrom
Description:
the most numerous breed of dragon, the Thunderhorns inhabit the eastern hinterlands, roaming its tundras in a massive heard led by their alpha, Maelstrom. due to their large bodies and long wings Thunderhorns are the only dragon that takes flight by running along the ground before lifting into the air. These dragons are also called “Thunderhorns” for a reason; by inhaling and forcing air through the hollow crest on their heads, the “horn”, Thunderhorns can produce an ear splitting call that can be heard for miles
Notable Thunderhorns:
Maelstrom(pictured above)
Blue
Saphire
General Dragon Notes:
- obviously most of the dragons were based on dinosaurs, the Iron-Jaw being based on the T.Rex, Razortooth based on raptors, the Featherwing baced on Archaeopteryx, and the Thunderhorn being literally just a parasaurolophus with wings attached.
- the Dreadnought's design was based on a Galapagos tortoise while their behavior is based on a hippopotamus
- ALL DRAGONS, regardless of breed, gender, or coloration) have dark patches surrounding their eyes; this helps keep the sun out of ther eyes when flying.
- all dragons have night vision, but the Razortooth has the best after the extinct lunar phantom
- Nhilus' personality was loosely based on Iron Bull from Dragon Age Inquisition
- Sula is often referred to as "the brood mother" due to her love of all members of her breed, and tendency to take in orphaned featherwings.
- the youtuber "Commander Holly" served as the main inspiration for Sula's personality(i almost gave her a pigeon's colors and markings because of this)
- there is some sexual dimorphism between male and female dragons, mainly in color patterns and general size and normally go unnoticed. the most obvious difference is male Razortooths have a crest of feathers on the back of their heads
- Razortooths are covered in fur like feathers and sport color patterns akin to predatory animals such as wolves, foxes, and even tigers.
- although not clearly visible, all dragons have opposable thumbs.
- altough dragons are a sapient race, they still follow some primal instincts. the most notable of these is their mating season that runs through autumn.
- Razortooths can lay up to 5 eggs per mating season, whereas most other dragons lay about 1-3
- there are two other species of dragons that once existed, but sadly have gone extinct. the Lunar Phantom, and the Firebolt.
- Aeon(the last elder dragon) knows every dragon in the hinterlands. however he has no idea Berwald, a Firebolt, exists
- Dragon names are typically a draconic word that describes the dragon's personality or the circumstances of their birth. "Nhilus" means "annihilator", "Bestra" means "rapid", "Sula" means "mother", and "Maelstrom" means "hurricaine"
- some dragons have names that are literally just descriptions of the dragon such as "Blue" "Red Eye" and "Valus" which literally means vast(fat) in draconic
- Draconic(Saurise) is the traditional language of the dragons.
- dragons are typically bi-lingual with most being able to speak both Draconic and Formosan(English) fluently
- Draconic has never been fully translated into Formosan, with only a handful of phrases and words being known
- one Draconic phrase, commonly used by Nhilus in battle, is "Tar'dese vor islaan Saurine" wich, according to him, roughly translates to "FUCK YOU I'M A DRAGON!"
- while some dragons blame the nords for the current state of their race, the fall of the Saurine was actually brought about by one of their own kind.
- the Saurine are slowly dying out, but FERAL dragons are still widespread throughout Valspire
- feral dragons or "Ferals" as they're commonly called are dragons who were born in the wild and have reverted back to their primal state, acting only on instinct and being little more than animals.
- Saurine born dragons can't become feral, but if taken in at a young enough age, feral dragons can become Saurine. this is rare though and has only successfully happened 5 times.
- "feral born saurine" as they're called can relapse and become feral. this often happens when the dragon becomes to angry or stressed
- a common myth among the Saurine is that if a feral bites you, you become feral, similar to vampires. this is completely false however.
here's a link to each individual dragon for a better look at their bodies and sizes compared to a human
