Description
Here's how I color my clays since I only buy beige, white, and translucent. Why do I do that? It saves me monies because I hate spending the dough on a deep royal purple, only to use about as much as it takes to make one teeny tiny grape.I'm cheap, but not lazy. xP lol

I'm going to be starting up making clay charms, and this has seriously just saved me $50 in clays alone. This is a brilliant technique and I will be using it first off in my new endeavor to make cute little clay charms!
Thank you for sharing this with the world!

This sounds like a great method! It kills me to have leftover clay in colors I will basically NEVER use again XD.
I'm just cautious about the toxicity (or not) of baking pastels o__o
Call me paranoid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry XD.
I'll take a gander at what I can find on the web, but if you already have the answer I'd love to know (I checked the FAQs and didn't see anything about toxicity but then again if it was there, I probably missed it )

HanaClayWorks In reply to Nethrion [2009-04-17 04:04:30 +0000 UTC]
^_^ it doesn't add any toxicity to the clay whatsoever and the heat won't make it evaporate into deadly fumes, so don't worry!

What is the best type/brand of pastel to use? I tried this with some oil pastels I had from a bit ago, but I guess either they were too old or too hard because when I shaved the stick and put it in the clay, it just stays in shavings and doesn't blend :'( Any suggestions??

wow I started doing figures and other wacky items with clay and I noticed that it costs a lot for colors I won't use to much and when I saw this I was really happy to see that I can do that with pastels and I looks really pretty in the end. Thanks this really will save me a lot of money. This is an instant

Cool, ill try this, polymer clay is kinda .. expensive, well, i don't know if in other countries its cheap. 1 question, does the pastel/ color fall off? Just making sure so i can close my mind about it. Reply please!
π: 0 β©: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to carmiecarmela [2008-11-13 22:14:10 +0000 UTC]
if you mix it in well, there's no reason for the pastel to fall off

This is such a great idea! I was going to go to Michael's to pick up some new colored clay, but now I know I only need some translucent (since I have a huge 1lb box of white, haha). Thanks for this tutorial!
Also, I was wondering: This method of coloring the clay doesn't make for any discoloration after firing, will it? Does the color fade or darken?
π: 0 β©: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to ProstheticXHearts [2008-11-13 22:15:58 +0000 UTC]
sometimes it does. it depends on the quality of your pastels, i would assume. i usually have that problem with the reds fading a lot. it's different for each of us.

but help!
i just bought some Studio Sculpey and i've softened it all i can,and when i put the shavings it,the whole ball of clay goes all vodfnvjkd and falls apart.
*confusionvortex*

HanaClayWorks In reply to sleeping-banana [2008-08-23 05:50:18 +0000 UTC]
D: ohnoes!
i've been having problems with the sculpey doing that as well. i'm not sure what it is that causes it, but it's mainly a problem with the original sculpey and those that come in large blocks. they seem to want to crumble a lot quicker than other kinds of clay! try adding a bit of TLS to it because it might be because the clay became too dry... or letting it sit a while. Sometimes it helps me, but I still have to figure out what in the world is going on when it happens like that, y'know?
so far, the smaller blocks of sculpey III hold up fine for this technique... as well as any fimo soft or kato clay. i have problems with the regular sculpey and the larger blocks (like the 1 lb blocks) of white sculpey.

oh,you have the sameproblem?
i thought that clay just hated me >:
TLS isn't available here.
i'm just lucky we have sculpey here.
maybe it's not in room tempreature?
it becomes hard as rock if you don't play with it for an hour.

HanaClayWorks In reply to sleeping-banana [2008-08-24 05:21:45 +0000 UTC]
that's pretty much how all clay is... it just gets that way because the clay gets to rest and goes back to the original consistency.

this is an awesome idea ! i only have air drying clay, cause i canΒ΄t find normal clay here in germany.. only fimo -_-' but i'll just try this out ! Thanks !!!

HanaClayWorks In reply to Zoppo [2008-08-17 06:35:15 +0000 UTC]
no problem! i believe air-dry clay can be mixed with some water if it dries out while you're working with it, so you might want to use water to mix the pastels into the clay? i've never tried it myself, but i'm sure it'll work fine.
