Description
Here's how I color my clays since I only buy beige, white, and translucent. Why do I do that? It saves me monies because I hate spending the dough on a deep royal purple, only to use about as much as it takes to make one teeny tiny grape.I'm cheap, but not lazy. xP lol

i use chalk pastels by loew and cornell. they're pretty cheap - a box like mine will be under $10 (when i bought them anyway)

I'm just wondering, once you add the pastel to translucent clay, does the clay still retain any of the translucent like effect when baked?

HanaClayWorks In reply to Sparklefiend [2008-04-19 17:42:20 +0000 UTC]
micheal's does sell pastels- yes. they sell it where they have all the "professional" art supplies alongside the prismacolor colored pencils and charcoal.
i really should shop there less.

HanaClayWorks In reply to Sparklefiend [2008-04-19 22:35:01 +0000 UTC]
it depends on what you buy - they can get quite expensive! the set i have is from loew and cornell and i think they're under $10 at micheal's but i'm not too sure. i got mine from my university bookstore a while ago, but i know that they do carry the same brand at michael's. also, if you have the sunday newspaper, they usually have the 40% off coupons in the ads so that'll be a nice money saver too!

i have another question. I tried this w/ sculpey, but it doesn't seem to want to blend very well w/ the clay. do u have any suggestions on how it can possibly work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to Sparklefiend [2008-05-08 15:55:18 +0000 UTC]
i've found that out recently too... it used to work for me really well, but i tried doing it the other day and it just sort of crumbles. what i usually do to mix the pastels better is to mix some of the pastels with TLS before mixing it with the clay. it helps to better mix the pastels. i'm not sure why sculpey's been so temperamental lately... i'll see what i can find out about it. >_<

if i wanted a really dark colour, would i be better off with buying the colour instead of mixing it.
(i want a dark red, like maroon)

HanaClayWorks In reply to khayotic [2008-03-18 16:29:52 +0000 UTC]
you would probably be better off buying the color if it's an extremely dark color mainly because it'll save you a lot of time, especially if you need it in large quantities. this is mainly for the times when:
a. you don't need a lot of the color or
b. the store's closed and you're desperate D:

O_O wow
I don't have much clay and I used acrylics ..
and that was a nightmare
because it appears I lack patience to wait for the coat to dry
and I messed my first try ... most of them ><''
now o__O
if u used the pastel .. how do you keep hair .. what ever stick to your finger
away from the clay work ..
I mean no matter how much I clean my hands .. the towel brings hair in when I dry it -__-;;
help me ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to ChocoAng3l [2008-02-21 16:36:26 +0000 UTC]
to keep the hair and stuff off of the clay, i usually either wear gloves while working with it or i just keep a nice big tub of water nearby with a clean towel (white, usually paper towel) so that i could clean my hands every so often. it works for when i made the white wedding cake and kept the hair and lint out of it quite nicely.
in all honesty, if you have trouble with lint try doing the following:
- wear white clothes... and i mean WHITE.
- tie your hair away from your work area
- wipe everything down with those alcohol paper towels that also disinfect (like lysol or something) before putting your clay on it. the table may look clean, but it's usually pretty full of lint and dirt.
- wear latex gloves
- if all else fails, wipe your piece down with a brush and alcohol before baking. it should help to get rid of some of the hairs on the surface. then, you can just paint it and wait for it to dry.

i am doing this right now at my computer. it works and is really grat but i find that the sculpey is sticking to my hands more with the pigment. how do i stop that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to Lera-star [2008-01-31 18:19:37 +0000 UTC]
let it rest for a while before you pick it up again. sometimes, i find that when i add the pastels to the clay and then knead the clay a lot, it'll get much much softer than it should be. if that happens, i just let it sit for a few hours before picking it up again. otherwise, you can try wearing gloves, or using some corn starch to starch your hands before picking up the clay. it'll help a little bit.

i tried that. i add black, and i get gray! if i add too much, i gets chunky, even after i chop it into fine powder!

HanaClayWorks In reply to RedMapler [2008-01-19 03:33:31 +0000 UTC]
chunky? how? is the clay chunky or is the powder chunky?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RedMapler In reply to HanaClayWorks [2008-01-19 04:14:20 +0000 UTC]
like, if i cut the chilled clay in half, there are streaks, and you can see the "chunks"
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to RedMapler [2008-01-19 05:08:00 +0000 UTC]
i see...
usually when that happens to me, i mix some TLS into the pastel before mixing it into the clay. that way, the powder is dissolved and will less likely leave chunks inside of the clay.
let me know if it doesn't work and i'll figure something else out for you. ^_^
