Here's how I color my clays since I only buy beige, white, and translucent. Why do I do that? It saves me monies because I hate spending the dough on a deep royal purple, only to use about as much as it takes to make one teeny tiny grape.I'm cheap, but not lazy. xP lol

Aha! I was wondering how I could achieve coloured clay without buying it individually, I'm quite crud at painting..
I just have beige sculpey, will this work fine or should I try and get a paler colour? Or not even sculpey at all.. hehe
This is really helpful! Thanks ~

beige sculpey should work OK. i started out with a beige color and was able to color the clay pretty well. the one thing that you have to remember is that it'll be impossible to get yellow or white from it. otherwise, it's fine. ^_^

i was wondering what sort of pastels you used and clay... i have normal sculpy, will that work? Though i'm not sure about the pastel kind. thanks

the pastel would work fine with any type of clay that you use. for the pastels, i use loew and cornell. there's more information in my FAQs

Great idea! I may have to use pastels on future pieces I sell dog art.

I always joke that all my custom pieces come with "free pet hair" ;0P We have 3 dogs, 4 cats, and many pet rats. Quite the houseful, to add hair onto each of my pieces! haha

lol, i only buy red, yellow, blue, black, white, and transleucent. i mix all of my colors from there... except brown, because it's an absolute pain in the butt to get the shade of brown you're looking for. this is a smart idea, but it might drive me crazy that i'd never be able to get the same shade of a color twice. how do you use pastels to get that airbrushed look on, say, a loaf of bread to make it look darker on top and more realistic? i currently only have oil pastels, and they're already a pain to work with on paper. i dont even want to know how well they'd warm up to clay.
i suppose i should get my rear in gear and buy some chalk pastels.

to do that, i normally just mix some of the brown pastels into TLS and brush it directly onto my loaf or bun before baking. that way, the underside or inside stays white (or whatever color) but the outside is brown. :3

color pastel is the same that oil pastels?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HanaClayWorks In reply to lamalditardilla [2007-10-02 15:23:20 +0000 UTC]
the color pastels i'm talking about are the chalk pastels not oil pastels. i've never experimented with oil before, but i would figure that it won't blend as well since it's almost like a crayon as opposed to a piece of chalk. with chalk pastels, you can shave pigments off of them like you see in the tutorial. oil pastels would probably come out in flakes. you could just try it on a small piece of white clay and see how it turns out.

"like shaving a baby's bottom"?? who would do that to put in their clay??????
*cough* anyhoo....
thats a really good idea! since paints hate me so much (even on paper...) i cant stand painting the random little things i make from sculpey....what kind of pastels do you use? and will the colour come off after awhile?
great tutorial btw

HanaClayWorks In reply to bleedman-fan [2007-09-23 01:56:42 +0000 UTC]
D: i would put that in my tutorials... *sniffle*
yeah paints hate me too. xD i use semi-cheap ones from the Loew & Cornell company. iono how common they are at craft stores because i got them in my college's bookstore about 3 years ago. lol the colors will not rub off after a while since you're mixing it into the clay itself. it'll be similar to probably the company coloring the clay in the factory. if you put the pastel pigments just on the outside of the clay (like how you would put paint on the clay) then it will rub off. if you mix it into the clay, then it should be fine.
let me know if you have anymore questions~!

Er... Roughly how much chalk pastel dust do you add? Because my colours just always turn out pale >_>
Also, would you have to bake the clay longer if it has pastels in it? I baked a bit for just a little longer than I usually would, and I could still poke my nail into it.. just wondering if it's the pastels that were doing that...?
Oh and (sorry I'm being annoying lol) can you blend pastel colours together easily? Say, if you didn't have a green pastel, could you put in blue and yellow and actually get a good green?
Thanks
