Description Here's how I color my clays since I only buy beige, white, and translucent. Why do I do that? It saves me monies because I hate spending the dough on a deep royal purple, only to use about as much as it takes to make one teeny tiny grape.

I'm cheap, but not lazy. xP lol

This is a really helpful tutorial!
I've tried this method before, but when I add too much pastels, the clay becomes dry and crumbly...does that happen to you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to NightMargin [2008-08-02 04:31:13 +0000 UTC]

actually, yeah it does. xD i'm still trying to figure out how to get around that, but so far, i've had no luck. i find that it happens the most using sculpey and not so much any of the other clays. :/

I use hand cream. The one you used for your skin before you take a bath D:. At least that works for the "clay" i use (here were i live, there isnΒ΄t sculpey or polimer clay, it is called "cold pottery" [masa flexible] and it does not need baking). Maybe it could work with they clay you use.

it might. i've heard it being used by other clay artists, but have never tried it before. i'll try it next time! ^_^

i'm not sure since i've never tried it before. you could take a small piece of clay and see if it works... then let me know how it goes.

I'm SO afraid right now!

But this is a very helpful tutorial, thank you! Now I have to see whether I can get pastels down here.

I'll have to try this sometime, great idea for coloring the clay. As much as I like working with Sculpty some of there colors are a bit to neon for what I'm working on.

HanaClayWorks In reply to twig7998 [2008-08-01 00:07:52 +0000 UTC]

i was at the craft store the other day and was blinded by the *neon* pink sculpey pack. wonder what people use that color for?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

twig7998 In reply to HanaClayWorks [2008-08-03 14:33:37 +0000 UTC]

I suppose the neon colors can be fun to work with at times depending what someone is making, but they are to bright for trying to make anything more natural like plants/animals. (I've been meaning to try my hand at a little turtle for a friend).

Mine gets all crumbly when I add it. Chalk pastels are best right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to moon-finder [2008-07-05 02:58:33 +0000 UTC]

yeah chalk pastels are best. i find that sometimes, super sculpey can crumble quite a bit... or if you add too much or overwork the clay. try letting it sit a while or adding some plasticizer to it.

hmm... I tried to use some of these sticks that were in a prismacolor case i had. I didn't think that they would work too well, seeing as how they weren't pastels, lol.

I'll keep working at it though!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to SilvrFox122 [2008-07-05 03:05:31 +0000 UTC]

you might be mistaking the art sticks for pastels. art sticks are like the insides of a colored pencil... it's got too much wax to work well.

Nice tutorial! But I tried it...and even though I used quite a lot of pastel powder, the clay didn't color much at all, and became really crumbly afterwards. I used white clay and dark brown powder. I think I'm doing something wrong. xD What should I do?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to Aariiadne [2008-06-22 06:38:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm using Sculpey III.

HanaClayWorks In reply to Aariiadne [2008-06-22 15:34:15 +0000 UTC]

hrmmm... i get that problem sometimes too, but it's usually with super sculpey. Maybe you could try using some tls into the clay so that it helps moisten it?

simply-imagine In reply to ??? [2008-06-19 22:42:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the great tutorial! (:

By the way, are there any other methods for coloring clay? Maybe like chalk, crayon, water color paint (not wet), anything else? Because I don't have pastels on me right now, and I like the idea that you have!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to simply-imagine [2008-06-22 06:39:25 +0000 UTC]

you can do it with make-up as well... or powdered food coloring. otherwise, chalk will work, but the colors of chalk won't make it very dark.

they're pretty much like chalks, except higher quality with more pigment.
