How do you describe the expression of this girl?

My own thoughts: It's not anger. Is it boldness? Aristocratic? Arresting, haunted eyes. Inward-looking even as she looks outward at the world.

*****

From insightful comments about the expression of this girl, I've decided to post them:

"Uncompromising" (thanks to dangel88.)

"Commanding"

"Assuredness"

"Decisive" (thanks to Jenny)

"Purposeful" (thanks to osyris)

"Contemplation"

Hi Robert, I was looking at this piece at auction and struck by the subtle texture. Very nice. It appears to me that she is wearing a wool coat. How beautiful you have rendered it. I feel the pursed lips and strong gaze give this girl all the moxie one could ask for.

Gordon,

Thank you very much.

And by the way I'm reducing my prices at auction. Please pass that information to whomever you might know who has an interest.

I get as close as I can to the original, but can't show on the web the subtlety of that wool coat nor the (boasting here) incredible hair that I consider my trademark. Who can render hair as I can?

It is true Robert. Your work is exceptional in many different ways. You know I appreciate not only the result, but work both mental and physical that goes in to each one.

You appear to have mastered the Drybrush technique to the same degree Wyeth has. It's an amazing portrait and the subtle quality of the light makes the somewhat complex look on het face all the more expressive.

Very Wyeth-esque, probably due to the dry-brush. Really lovely.

Thank you.

Yes. The dry-brush. One can get carried away with it. In "That Look" I restrained myself, but look at this!

Myself, I feel as if she's just been crying, or close to, and if she just decided to stop. And stopped.

Brilliant, as usual.

Thank you.

I can see that. You see her past ("just been crying") and her present ("decided....And stopped."). That she's been crying or suppressed it is palpable in her expression.

I think you're right, but I suspect not in the way you mean. Do you mean "shrewd or cunning, esp. in a selfish way; scheming" (Webster's)? I don't want to go into the problem with this definition in its inclusion of the word "selfish", especially if you see the way Webster's defines "selfish". However, "calculating" stems from "calculate" which means "to rekon or determine by reasoning, evaluating, etc; estimate, judge". This is where I think you're right. To reason, evaluate, estimate and judge means to have a purpose in mind.

Thank you for leading me to that.

I say the book definition is a little bias. Similar to the negative aura of terms like "consequence", this word should be given a natural definition. I interpret the term to mean "anticipating or planning for future events through deliberate observation or awareness of one's environment and/or surroundings".

amazing, such a great watercolour. I would say that expression is quite unreadable and it reminds me much of the look my teachers used to wear. Really fantastic picture though.

Thank you.

You've got me thinking.

Sternness. I think that's the look my best teachers had. Yes there is that. Now, sternness is a form of the concept "uncompromising".

An individual who is uncompromising is one who is self-confident. In that sense, sternness is a virtue not an evil attitude.
