Not me being rude! "Sexual dimorphism" is the term for when two genders of the same species are significantly different from each other (which can get rather extreme). And hey, we've apparently only seen male draconequi and female alicorns.
And if you don't like shipping: This doesn't actually support it. From a species point of view it looks more like Celestia and Luna came in and took Discord's territory.
This IS Celestia VS Discord: Colours are based mostly on the stained glass window of Discord's defeat.
Oh, and Discord's head being disproportionately large was a mistake but I think it came out okay (despite his not matching Celestia). Ah well!

And I can think of stories of mortals becoming constellations, but not gods, at least not in the Greek stuff... Still, some species have such a strong symbiotic relationship that they're not too distinct from others, so maybe it's not so outlandish.

We know from the cakes that the three pony tribes are not different species but are different traits of one specie. Traits can skip a few generations of a family line, but traits none the less. Could just be that Cadence was the first alicorn in Equestria know history to have a foal as we have seen that alicorns are very rare, and if she had a colt who to say it couldn't be draconequus.

Interesting,however they are clearly two different species.
Discord is a Draconequs and Celestia and Luna are Alicorns,which so far seems to be a different type of pony.Draconequs aren't ponies,they seem to be more like a Chimera.
There have been some theories about Alicorn Sexual dimorphism that male "Alicorns" are without wings and they put Prince Blueblood as an example,which sort of fits Jayson Theissen comments that "All Alicorns are Royalty but not all Royalty are Alicorns"

Some sexual dimorphism is so extreme that people spent years thinking certain genders were a separate species. Crops up most often with invertebrates and deep sea critters, e.g. the Tapefish, Bignose, and Whalefish turned out to be 1 species [link]
Plus "draconequus" is Latin and most species have a common name, and "alicorn" isn't strictly canon for winged unicorns yet: The amulet could have been referring to unicorn horn substance since that's what it super-powered, and plenty of weapons/etc have had animal designs without being named after that animal.
+ Discord's head ended up so lacking in equine features the "equus" part of "draconequus" still needs some explaining.
