Description
So yesterday I had to go to an animation showcase for my class. It was pretty good. One of the shorts in particular stood out to me, a film called "The Hangman." It was so creepy and the art was so good! I got really inspired to make something with a similar vibe. So somehow this idea came to me. I don't know if this counts as bottom up perspective, but it's perspective nonetheless. Next time I'll make sure to do a more precise angle. So uh, what's going on in this image? Well, Alice met a group of cultists that did not appreciate her religion. So they opted to burn her alive as a heretic. But, Gavin offered to take her place instead. A knight must protect his lady at all costs. How is he gonna get out of this one??? Well, that's for me to know and you to find out. Why is it always Gavin in the dangerous situations? Well, being a knight is dangerous business. But the most important thing is when he gets back up afterwards.
This is definitely one of the more experimental pieces I've posted here I think. But drawing it was really fun. I can't believe I did this in a day, I must be getting faster at drawing. Well, idk. Let me know what you think about it. Also, 1:30 am? It's real artist hours.

JESUS IS THAT YOU- no im kidding hah
hrfk never done this before but
SO first of all, the overall atmosphere and impact of this picture is really well done. The mobs screaming and the dude getting crucified really shows the intensity and fear in this piece, as does the red sky and overall redness of quite literally everything in this(not a bad thing) Color usage is amazing, and the anatomy of the people is very well done(he has nice abs) but the perspective is a tiny bit off. And while this may be just a personal preference i do think the fire should be a little bit brighter? fire should create a harsher light and dudes legs dont seem to have the right light source(light should come from the fire so his toes should be a bit brighter) The mobs fingers are kinda wonky sometimes, and some of the lines are pretty thick, especially the ones on the guy in the very front
Still this is really original since we dont usually see people getting crucified in front of angry mobs, so good job!

Oh yeah, could you tell me what bothered you about the perspective? I'm really trying to master it, so every little bit helps

i feel like the mob in the front are too... uh, side view? for a bottom view perspective at least. the guy in the front also kinda makes it seem like its coming from top view instead
Unless this isnt bottom view perspective? It kinda looks like it judging from the position of the cross

I see what you mean! The guy on the right isn't looking in the right direction lol. I tried to make it look like the view was from someone in the crowd, so that's why the guy in front is top viewish (he's kinda short lol.) The crowd is supposed to be standing in a circle around the cross, so that's why the cross itself is in a side perspective. But yeah, thanks for helping me out!

Gavin died for our sins π Naw, just kidding. But I knew someone would make that reference xD
Ayy, thanks for the critique! Funny you should mention the fire looking strange, it was a last minute addition that I decided to put in after I already colored everything. Hence why the lighting is a little weird there. But yeah, I see what you mean!
I did the thick lines on the front dudes on purpose, since they were closer to the viewer. But maybe I should have used value instead, I'm still getting used to using more value instead of lines in places. Next time, I'll be sure to look over everything again.

Thanks! I'm trying to attack my weaker points so I can improve faster, and perspective is one of them. Thanks for the encouragement!

Yeah! We can't just sit around and let him burn, someone's gotta help him out! Thankfully he's got an ally in the back there that'll save him.

This is super intense! Awesome job on the angles and perspective though, especially with the lines and shading, it ties together very nicely to create such a strong image. Poor Gavin's always getting the worst of things, but I'm sure he'll somehow get out of this one as he does everything else!

Thanks! I do feel that my coloring is improving somewhat, but I still got some more stuff to learn about. Next time I'll be sure to get the bottom up perspective I've been trying for! And yeah, Gavin's the most medeival esque of my characters so I guess that's why these ideas come to me. I've gotta consider his feelings more xD

Whoa - a brutal piece. I think the fire is done well, particularly how it mixes in with the atmosphere and creates a smoglike, red sky. This appears to be a bottom, side angle perspective in my opinion. Not that I am an expert haha, but I think bottom up perspective would be more slanted, with a dramatic and sharp upward angle view, so that the legs are much larger than the top of the body. But I see you are headed on the right track. I like the theme of self-sacrifice and chivalry, very apt for this season. What a cliffhanger, but I see hope - is that an angel in the background? Something tells me the tables will be turned soon on the bad guys!

Thanks! Indeed, true bottom perspective is avoiding me. I don't really know how to tackle it because I usually start with the head. Maybe I'll try to start from the feet instead next time.
Yeah, that's Uriel in the background! He doesn't like Gavin, but at the same time he appreciates him giving his life to save Alice. So he's a bit on a fence about it, but I think he'll decide to help him in the end.

You're welcome! Perspective in general seems a challenging area, kudos for continuing to practice! I think I now remember seeing Uriel in a comic strip you made a while ago. Come on Uriel, time to put your differences aside and rescue poor Gavin!

Anyways, this looks great and those warm colors fit in really well.

Thanks! I was kinda afraid of posting it since it's kinda different from what I usually draw I guess. But it's what came to me, so I committed to it. It was difficult trying to get the mood just right but I think I did alright with it. The sky in particular was kinda troublesome, but it was a nice learning experiment. And don't worry, Gavin's gonna be alright! ...somehow xD

Indeed! Well, that's not what I subscribe to, but that's what these people think. Medieval times are indeed a harsh time to live in.

Yes, but itβs more fun before. Medieval times always have the thrills and chills of life, as if life is always expendable, as it should be...
...and where curiosity is at its peak, the marvels of the unknown and the forbidden...
...unlike this stagnant era that we all live in now, where we live in such equality, where we do nothing but to compare and complain, people living in such frivolities, pretending to know everything, every cure for every disease, even foolish enough to attempt to extend their lifespan or make life eternal...Β
...what a pitiful world we live in...

...Woah. That's deep! I think I've told you this before, but you should pick up writing! Reading that gave me lovecraftian chills. But yeah, people these days don't realize how good life is compared to back then. No matter what time period, I think people will still complain over things.
