I was thinking of ice cream, so I drew this. It turned out a lot more mature looking than I envisioned in my head, but I really like it. Gives off a nice film-noir vibe. I really tried to focus on lighting, using lost edges in some places and rim lighting in others. It's one of the reasons I really like paintings, because you can lose so much information but your brain still sees it as a complete picture. It's really cool. I tried to put a nice spin on the detective office, because I've drawn it a bunch already and it'd be redundant to do it with the same lighting and angles. So you get to see a bit of the hallway too.

I think this is a good example of why it's important to push yourself in terms of composition. This was my first one. Notice how bland and flat it is. It's okay, but it probably wouldn't be a great drawing.

This was the one I redrew and ended up basing my sketch on. I exaggerated the perspective and space more. It looks a lot more interesting than my first one. The lesson is to never settle for good, but always aim for the best.

Speaking of that, I've been feeling a little better about my art lately. Like I've left an era behind and started a new one. I used to judge my art against others, and had a one sided rivalry too, but that's really no good. Improvement takes time, and there's a lot of things to consider when comparing art. The ages, for one. How long each have been drawing, for two. I'm pretty glad I kicked the rivalry thing, though. They'd been stagnating for a while. Like the same composition all the time, right down the middle. I'm rather disappointed, because I'm sure they have potential, but hey, doesn't everyone? I bet I have the potential to be a chef, but that's not the path in life I'm going to choose. Hey, I hope they prove me wrong and knock me out of the park. But I'm going to focus on making myself better, on my own merits. That's the path of the individual, the American! The only person I can improve is myself, so that's what I'm going to do.
