what else to say than: awesomeness.
no really, the tutorial is great and the end result is just epic. i love the pose of both and the perspective and the shading and coloring
since when do you draw?

Thanks Rookie141

I started drawing back in 2009. It was very rubbish at first and for about 4-5 months I just stopped using my tablet because of how ashamed I felt of my paintings. But then I just
started looking at online tutorials and looked at loads of them and picked out techniques from each that worked and in the end I was left with my own style of painting that I was comfortable with.

Rookie141 In reply to Hax09 [2013-08-04 10:18:19 +0000 UTC]

you... draw since 09? ._. started with tablet or started at all??
i still could hit myself for stopping drawing for nearly my whole elementary school time - i could be better now if i hadn't stop
but will/would/could/do you show links to those tutorials on your page? i guess it could be also helpful for some other people

Hax09 In reply to Rookie141 [2013-08-11 17:56:37 +0000 UTC]

I have been drawing on lined paper since the age of 3-4

But on a tablet I started in 09. I was very rubbish. I remember thinking that there's no way I'll ever get good at this. But in the end I just got down to it and figured that thinking negatively wont help me.
I can't really pinpoint any links but I think www.imaginefx.com is a good place to start. That really helped me.

KatBanditSmokey [2013-01-05 09:38:57 +0000 UTC]

I have two questions if you dont mind. I wanted to know how many layers did this take or something like this on average would be and what is the opacity and flow you start off with the flat grayscale?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Hax09 In reply to KatBanditSmokey [2013-01-07 21:54:59 +0000 UTC]

Hey KatBanditSmokey!

Altogether it probably took me about 5-6 layers.

1. Background Colour (Usually a mid tone grey to begin with)
2. Sketch Layer
3. Flat shading
4. Detailed shading
5. Flat colouring
6. Detailed Colouring

* Note that the Detailed shading, Flat Shading and Sketch Layer all merge into one when you start Flat Colouring.

The only time the flow setting changes is when you zoom in to paint in the details. Other than that the Opacity and Flow settings remain at 100%.

sheenaduquette [2012-01-30 08:38:32 +0000 UTC]

.. the fuck? I thought this was a photo. i_______i waahh.

I have more questions about how you went about getting that realistic, grungy metal texture going on in the painting? I mean. My mind. It's still blown. I mean, I understand the level of lighting and texture you must have knowledge of is immense, but I.. I always struggle getting my tools to work with me the way I want, you seem to have just backhanded them into working for you beautifully. Awesome work man.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Hax09 In reply to sheenaduquette [2012-02-01 12:13:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Nyurt !

Yeah I've been having to post W.I.P and tutorials for my past few deviations mainly for the reason that most people think it's a photo ! I guess it's a compliment

Let me know if you have any questions (You said you did but forgot to ask the question )

I think the more you paint the more you get used to the brush. It may sound corny but you end up making the brush settings work for you. I think I may have mentioned this as a tip where you don't have to keep switching the darkness back and forth if you get the hang of the pen pressure setting (hard strokes for dark and lighter strokes for light)

Q Hax: On 02 The Flat Shading - at what percentage are the opacity and the flow 100 to 100, 100 to 50, 75 to 50?? Cause that step is causing me quite trouble.
P.S. The grey back ground- at grey scale is it good to be near 50% or lower. You said the flat shading you're doing is in mid gray scale (and i'm thinking that's about around 55-75 % max) and i put my on around 40 and it's STILL dark for me!

Shivwacka In reply to Shivwacka [2012-01-18 16:52:42 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh and what brush are you using for the detailing is it the hard round or the airbrush open opacity flow?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Hax09 In reply to Shivwacka [2012-01-18 22:06:02 +0000 UTC]

The Opacity and Flow setting are both 100% You don't need to change them till you've got to the detailing part.

I kind of realised a mistake I made when I said to paint in the sketch layer. I meant to say paint below the sketch layer. Basically for 02 Flat Shading your layer order should be (from top to bottom):

Sketch /
Flat shading /
Background

In Sketch you should have your sketch layer which I'm guessing you wouldn't touch since you're past that step now so lock it.

The Flat shading layer is where you would block in the grayscale values. As a personal preference I start off with a mid level grey (not necessary that you do too) most of the time but that isn't the same for all paintings since some are darker or lighter than others. By mid level gray I mean something like 50-60 on the grayscale slider.

The background layer should be a gray background. Usually something in the region of 30-45 in the grayscale slider. Again I would lock this and wouldn't touch this....

Hope that helped. The brush for detailing is the same brush throughout. Only the flow setting changes to something like 10-20 %

I'm glad you found it useful. I thought I'd make mine more detailed as most tutorials here only briefly explain the process. I know I'd want to know it in as much detail as possible if I was trying to learn something new.
