Thanks Covewood !
Lol.. it was quite simple. All I did was create a layer above the black and white detailed shading and set the layer mode for that new layer to 'colour'....
that way whatever I coloured in would be that colour but because of the layer mode it would show through the Black and white detailing too. Does that make sense ?
That was the easy part. Once the flat colouring was done I had to detail that whole painting on a separate layer above the colour one. Which took HOURS !!!

Very impressive!
I would like to ask the same question as Miouwwww did:
HOW did you do that rusty texture.
You seem to do that in grey detailing, but there are also different colours to be seen in the last close up.
So please forgive me to ask that question again - it looks SO good and I'd like to know how that is done *.*

Hi SigiTurtle ! Thanks
The reason it's a different colour in the final is because I recoloured it differently on a separate layer above the original colour layer.
I created sketch lines around that 'rusty' area from the beginning as a reference point which I then painted in later on in grey. There's a number of things I did before it reached that final stage and one of them was to add a new layer above the colour layer and recolour the whole thing according to the reference image.
But as I have said before most of the detailing and hard work was done in the grayscale paintings. So that's where the rust comes from.

how did you make that "rusty"metal-look (I know it's not rust, but it looks so detailed even up close)? I can't fiigure out how you did it even when I try to study it superclose.

I think the Grayscale paintings played a big part in getting that rusty effect. I used a white/grey colour and a small brush. With that set up it's easier to pick out details as the white would be easily seen from a distance and the small size of it would make it look like fine details. Suggesting that it's rust or something similar. After that the colour didn't even have to do any work. The grayscale layer underneath took care of most of it...

ye but...how? I mean what did you do with the small white/grey brush? It may sound stupid, but it's the movement of the brush I'm interested in

Errr.... not sure what you mean... I'm not sure how to describe my hand movement in text form...
That's better shown on a video...

I don't think I will be making a video. It will take up a lot of my time and I don't think I have the confidence to make one either.

It's difficult to say since there's quite a long story that follows this particular painting.
I started it in October 2010 and worked on it on/off... Then my computer crashed which meant I lost all my work on it. But at the time I forgot I had this saved on a External Hard Drive. So I came across it about a year later and decided to continue working on it. Again I took long break in between because of work and college so that delayed it for a few months. But I made a promise to work on only this until it was finished.
So if you forget about the year it lay there in my HDD and the month or two break I'd say almost around about a month and a half.
It's like the universe didn't want me to complete this with the number of obstacles thrown my way !

Yep, it sure did !
In some ways I'm glad I delayed it.... The old me would have probably butchered this painting ! Look at the part with the flat colouring.. That's probably where I would have been thinking about finishing about had I completed this back then....

Hax09 In reply to Shivwacka [2012-01-01 18:47:41 +0000 UTC]
No idea mate
I usually have a mini break in between but I don't really plan that far ahead. I guess it will probably be a game based painting next. But you never know. I'm thinking about doing two projects simultaneously so I can cover more ground... So perhaps both movie and game
