I've gotten a couple of requests to see my hognoses eating. This is Dot eating a pinkie/fussy mouse--you can even see one of her fangs. (Hognoses have fangs in the back of their mouth to deflate toads and frogs.)I would have shot Zot eating too, but he is very shy and wouldn't eat with me standing over him.

Very mildly. Getting bit by one is like getting a decent spider bite. The fangs on hognoses are primarily for deflating toads and frogs, which would be their primary food in the wild.

its a wonderful shot,what morph of hognose is she because she doesnt look like any of the ones ive seen for sale here.i have seriously considered purchasing one for a while now and dot looks gorgeous.

I LOVE ZOT! Such a great looking snake...I am searching for a hognose at the moment, myself...
Oh and you may want to work some toads into the Hoggies diet if you dont already do, because a diet of only mice can hurt a hognose's liver, Fatty Liver I think it is called, and shorten the lifespan...

I will ask my vet the next time I take a trip to see her. I've never heard of it happening before, as that usually happens with high fat foods, and I don't think mice are high fat, but you never know. Thanks for sure, as I will talk to my vet about it and see if it is something to worry about!

That's the one thing that would keep me from owning a snake. O_O I'd feel guilty about the mouse.
Very good shot though. Captures the mood perfectly. Although, I think Dot should try eating it head first, and not arm first. XD

feed it pree killed mice, you can buy the at pet stores frozen if it bugs you so much

I kinda miss those days when my snakes ate rodents that small *sighs* But I now find it far more amusing when I tell people that I keep large rats in my freezer. The looks on their faces are just pricelss.

freakin' gross, freakin gross. lol. I think I wouldn't find it as gross if they weren't little ice mice you were feading them. It's a little disconserting to know that he eats dead things. I know we do to...but we are supposed to, he's not. It would be like me munching on a zombie...mmmmm zombies.

Mousicles are really easy--they live in the freezer and come out when it's time to feed. I hated having to feed the snakes live mice because it generally meant that the mice had to live with us for a couple of days and they are really gross animals...imo anyway.
Frozen mice is like taking chicken out of the freezer. LOL! So much easier to mess with, and far less gross.

LOL! Yeah! It is one of those crazy hognose quirks--the only thing I can think is that they would eat toads from the side to deflate them before eating them...but then again, they might just be stupid!

Nah...it probably has something to do with the frog thing. They might have to eat it from the side first to puncture the air sacs so they can get it down...
